About the Role

North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Trust is seeking to appoint a Specialty Doctor in Anaesthetics based at the Cumberland Infirmary, Carlisle. An element of cross site work to the West Cumberland Hospital, Whitehaven is anticipated. The successful candidate will be encouraged to develop a special interest to complement the other members of the department and will participate in the provision of services to the population of North Cumbria. This is an opportunity to join an organisation in which Clinicians are at the forefront of management.

Key Responsibilities

The successful applicant will join the current specialty doctors to provide elective anaesthesia sessions and contribute to a resident full shift rota not expected to exceed 1 in 8. Two 1:8 rotas are in place, one to support theatres and obstetrics and one to support ICU, both supported by a separate Consultant on-call. For daytime work, the successful applicant will be encouraged to work across a range of anaesthetic areas and develop areas of interest. There will be the expectation of working at both hospital sites to encourage greater experience.

Main Duties

The successful candidate will be expected to:

  • Share with colleagues the role of educational or clinical supervisor to junior doctors in training including induction, provision of supportive formal appraisals, supervision of learning portfolios, and career advice as appropriate.

Clinical Governance Commitment

The successful applicant will be required to demonstrate a firm commitment to the principles of Clinical Governance including:

  • Attending and contributing to the Trust Clinical Governance Programmes
  • Ensuring that staff within their area of responsibility are aware of the Trust’s Risk Management Strategy, and that it is implemented
  • Participating in the Trust Clinical Incident Reporting System
  • Developing a programme of personal continuing medical education and professional development in accordance with the recommendations of the relevant Royal Colleges

Qualifications

Essential: MBBS or recognised equivalent

Desirable: Relevant PG qualification

Experience Requirements

Essential:

  • Full GMC/GDC Registration
  • >Shall have completed at least four years’ full-time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis) at least two of which will be in a specialty training programme in a relevant specialty or as a fixed term specialty trainee in a relevant specialty; or shall have equivalent experience and competencies.
