Job Summary

This post is offered on a full-time (10 PA) basis, although less than full-time applications will be considered. There is also the potential for the post-holder to agree a job plan up to a maximum of 12 PA. The post will complement our existing consultant workforce, and individuals will work cross-site, but the successful applicant will work predominantly at either Pinderfields or Dewsbury Hospital.

The Department is supported by Specialist Registrars, Trust Grade doctors, Core Medical Trainees, GP VTS Trainees, foundation doctors and Physician Associates. The post being offered to complement the existing workforce.

Main Duties of the Job

As a Specialist Grade in General Medicine, your responsibilities will include:

  • Conducting ward rounds and attendance at dedicated MDT meetings
  • Providing specialist medical opinions
  • Participating in outpatient or virtual clinics and home visits
  • Contributing to teaching and training activities
  • Engaging in regular audit, data collection, and quality improvement work
  • Maintaining overview of all ward patients
  • Actively participating and facilitating discharges on the ward
  • Supporting and supervising junior doctors on the ward
  • Contributing to electronic and verbal handovers of patients

On-Call Responsibilities

This post includes on-call responsibilities as part of a dedicated Elderly on-call rota. Working arrangements currently consist of:

  • Scheduled evening duties 5pm-8pm Monday to Friday (currently 2:20 seeing older patients >80 years or >65 years from Care Homes or with frailty)
  • On-call weekends currently 1:8 (8-hour resident on call seeing approximately 20-25 patients with registrar support)

One consultant will be on call at Dewsbury and District Hospital, and two at Pinderfields General Hospital.

Supporting Professional Activities

The role includes Supporting Professional Activities (SPAs) in accordance with the Trust Framework, with at least a minimum of 1 SPA included in the core 10 PA timetable. Additional SPA or DCC time may be commissioned in line with the skills of the successful candidate and changing requirements of the service.

The General Medicine team at The Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust provides a crucial role for the Trust and our local community, striving to achieve excellent patient care and experience each and every time for all our patients. The team provides care for approximately 44 inpatient beds spread on the Pinderfields site and cares for all general medical patients, as well as supporting other medical colleagues in caring for patients.

Person Specification

Essential Criteria

  • Minimum of 12 years medical work (either continuous period or in aggregate) since obtaining a primary medical qualification, with at least 6 years in a relevant specialty in the Specialty Doctor and/or closed SAS grades (equivalent experience from other medical grades, including overseas, will be considered)
  • Medical Degree from a recognized medical school
  • Full Registration and a Licence to Practice with the General Medical Council (or eligibility for the same and having it prior to commencement)
