Leeds Teaching Hospitals is seeking a Senior Clinical Fellow in Colorectal Surgery for a fixed-term position of 12 months. Job Summary

The John Goligher Unit at St. James’s University Hospital is run by twelve Consultant Colorectal Surgeons with subspecialty interests in advanced and recurrent colorectal cancer, minimally-invasive and robotic surgery, pelvic floor surgery, abdominal wall reconstruction, complex inflammatory bowel disease, and intestinal failure. This position is ideal for senior trainees who have completed their general surgery training to CCT level or equivalent.

Main Responsibilities

Fellows on the unit will be expected to make sound independent clinical judgments and manage complex patients on a day-to-day basis. Key responsibilities include supervising and teaching registrars and SHOs, conducting rounds and clinics independently, and performing certain surgical lists appropriate to your level of experience. You will also participate in the Senior Registrar (SR) rota, providing supervision and support to the on-call Registrar.

Our academic department, led by Professor David Jayne, offers numerous research opportunities. Fellows are encouraged and supported to publish at least one manuscript during their fellowship year.

Essential Qualifications

To be considered for this position, applicants must have completed an appropriate general surgical training program and hold FRCS or equivalent qualifications. You must have appropriate clinical and surgical experience for this role, be registered with the General Medical Council (GMC), and demonstrate appropriate English language skills for a clinical position.

Desirable Experience

While not essential, experience in colonoscopy and completion of relevant colorectal courses would be advantageous. Evidence of extra achievements during your training, such as prizes or high-impact publications, will strengthen your application. An understanding of current UK colorectal cancer management practices is also desirable.

Eligibility Requirements

Applicants must have current UK professional registration or be eligible for registration. You must demonstrate appropriate English language skills for a clinical role and provide evidence of achievement of CCT equivalent competencies. The position requires eligibility to work in the UK and being up-to-date and fit to practice safely.
