Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is seeking a Senior Children’s Diabetes Specialist Nurse to join their dedicated team at Hull Royal Infirmary. This is a permanent, full-time position offering a competitive salary of £47,810 to £54,710 per annum. The post holder will be responsible for delivering expert nursing services to children and young people with diabetes.

Key Responsibilities
The post holder will take responsibility under the direction of the Consultant body to deliver an expert nursing service to patients with Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes. Additionally, some of the caseload will include Maturity Onset Diabetes of the Young (MODY) and Cystic Fibrosis related diabetes, from diagnosis until discharge or transition to the adult service.
You will deliver specialist nursing skills, demonstrate sound clinical knowledge and expertise in the autonomous management of children and young people within the diabetes service, to include nurse-led consultations with the child and family. The role requires excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively with patients and families during what can be a challenging time.
Main Duties of the Job
To hold responsibility of the children’s diabetes specialist nursing team. It will be necessary to work flexibly across a caseload of patients across both the hospital and community setting for local patients and to provide expert advice to other health care professionals and initiate guidelines based therapies that address acute management issues for diabetes.
The post holder will lead the development of evidence based clinical nursing practice in line with current research and guidelines and will participate in audit. Working across organisational, regional and national boundaries and form good working relationships with colleagues within the regional diabetes network will be essential aspects of this role.
Essential Qualifications
RSCN/RN (child) and current NMC Registration is required for this position. Candidates must also have completed a Children & Young people’s diabetes care module or equivalent qualification. A Teaching and Assessing qualification/mentorship course is also essential.
The successful candidate must be a current practice assessor and supervisor on the live database and provide evidence of ongoing continuing professional development. A Non-Medical Prescribing Qualification or willingness to undertake this is also required.
Desirable Qualifications
While not essential, candidates with a Management qualification, Masters degree or equivalent, or Counselling qualification would be particularly welcomed. These additional qualifications would support the development of specialist skills in this challenging role.
Essential Experience
Professional Clinical knowledge acquired through significant experience at Band 6 or above is essential for this position. Candidates must have significant experience of caring for children and young people with Type 1 & Type 2 Diabetes.
The ability to work as an autonomous practitioner is crucial, as is evidence of having worked collaboratively within a multi-disciplinary team. Understanding of professional and current issues in children’s health care including local and national guidance is also essential.
Communication & Interpersonal Skills
The successful candidate must have the ability to build credibility quickly and sustain it within the organisation. Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential, as is the ability to deal with telephone enquiries from staff, patients and carers using judgment to respond or refer to appropriate personnel.
The ability to impart complex information to patients, relatives and carers with different levels of understanding is vital. You will need to interact directly with patients who may recently have been diagnosed with a serious chronic condition and their family members, requiring exceptional interpersonal skills.
Special Attributes
The post holder must accept guidance and supervision from senior colleagues and maintain a personal and professional appearance and credibility. The ability to lead and motivate others is essential, as is the ability to prioritise own workload to work inside clinical targets and deadlines.
A conscientious, honest, reliable and good timekeeper is required. A full driving licence with access to a car is essential for community work, and the ability to work flexibly to meet the demands of the service is also required.
