Job Summary
We are seeking a committed, motivated, and enthusiastic Senior Specialist Biomedical Scientist to join our dynamic Clinical Biochemistry team. This role offers the chance to take on increased responsibility, extend your professional skills, and play an instrumental role in shaping the future of pathology services at HSL. The successful candidate will work within our new state-of-the-art Rapid Response Laboratory (RRL), contributing to cutting-edge diagnostic services.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
As a Senior Biomedical Scientist, you will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the routine Clinical Biochemistry section in collaboration with the Biochemistry Lead BMS. Your primary objective will be ensuring the provision of an efficient, high-quality service to patients and clinicians. The Clinical Biochemistry service handles numerous complex analyses and provides specialist services including renal and liver transplantation support.
Key Responsibilities Include:
• Generate high-quality scientific data for the Clinical Biochemistry section
• Organize and manage staff rotas, annual leave, and monitor/document sickness and other absences
• Prepare, update, monitor, and enforce Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
• Maintain internal and external quality control standards in accordance with UKAS ISO 15189:2012
• Investigate and manage incidents in line with HSL policy
• Provide technical advice to clinicians on result appropriateness and investigation choices
• Participate in quality control processes, achieving KPIs, TATs, and quality objectives
• Evaluate new equipment and techniques for scientific merit and cost-effectiveness
• Participate in staff recruitment and selection processes
• Facilitate training and development of scientific personnel, including SPRs and Biomedical Scientists
Essential Qualifications
• Qualification in pathology disciplines consistent with State Registration requirements
• MSc or equivalent experience in a relevant subject
• Current registration with The Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
• Specialist Diploma in relevant discipline
• Minimum 3 years HCPC registration
Essential Skills and Abilities
• Excellent organizational skills with strong attention to detail
• Ability to work accurately, neatly, and efficiently
• Strong team-working capabilities
• Basic keyboard skills and familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite
• Commitment to maintaining patient confidentiality
• Ability to work on own initiative
• Effective communication skills in English
• Proficiency with laboratory equipment relevant to clinical biochemistry
• Experience with statistical analysis software
• Ability to write and review Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)
Essential Experience
• Demonstrable experience working as a Specialist Biomedical Scientist in a Biochemistry Laboratory
• Experience working in a routine diagnostic laboratory environment
• Proficiency working within a laboratory Quality Management System
• Experience using Laboratory Information Systems
• Supervisory experience with staff management responsibilities
