Position Details
This is a fixed-term locum appointment for a period of six months, offering 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) specifically supporting our paediatric anaesthetic team at Leeds Children’s Hospital. The successful candidate will receive a comprehensive six-month contract with competitive NHS consultant terms and conditions.
Salary and Benefits Package
We offer an attractive salary range of £109,725 to £145,478 per annum, depending on experience and qualifications. Essential Qualifications and Requirements
Professional Registration
Applicants must hold full GMC Registration with a license to practice and be on the GMC Specialist Register via CCT (with proposed CCT date within 6 months of interview), CESR, or European Community Rights. All applicants must provide current GMC status information at the time of application.
Anaesthetic Qualifications
Candidates must possess FRCA or equivalent qualification and have completed at least 12 months in a recognised training programme in paediatric anaesthesia. Eligibility to work in the UK is essential, and applicants must demonstrate they are up to date and fit to practise safely.
Language Proficiency
All applicants must demonstrate adequate written and spoken English skills for effective medical communication. This can be shown through undergraduate medical training in English, achieving minimum IELTS academic score of 7.0 across all categories (with overall minimum 7.5), or achieving minimum Grade B across all OET medicine categories.
Clinical Experience Requirements
The successful applicant must demonstrate established skills in paediatric anaesthesia with at least 12 months advanced training in this specialty. We require evidence of continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances, high-level clinical experience and competence in all aspects of anaesthesia, and specific expertise in paediatric anaesthesia.
Teaching and Research Experience
Applicants should have experience in training undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors, along with evidence of participation in regular clinical audit. Experience in medical research and understanding of current NHS issues are essential. Previous experience supervising research by junior staff is desirable.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical Service Delivery
The post-holder will work with consultant colleagues to provide comprehensive anaesthetic services across Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust. This includes developing and consolidating expertise in paediatric anaesthesia, maintaining teaching and research excellence, supporting service plans for the specialty, and participating in clinical governance.
Teaching Commitments
As a teaching hospital, the Trust recognizes the importance of links with the University of Leeds School of Medicine. The successful candidate will contribute to undergraduate teaching programmes and collaborate with clinical colleagues to deliver appropriate teaching in accordance with Trust contracts.
Job Plan and Working Arrangements
The position consists of 10 PAs with 8.5 PAs of direct clinical care (DCC) and 1.5 PA of supporting professional activity (SPA). These will be delivered in anaesthesia with careful rota coordination with colleagues to ensure robust cover. Annual job plan reviews will be conducted with the Clinical Director or Lead Clinician.
Accountability and Professional Standards
The post-holder is managerially accountable to the Chief Executive and professionally accountable to the Chief Medical Officer through Clinical Directors. All consultants must work to standards set by the General Medical Council in Good Medical Practice and comply with Trust policies on conduct, health and safety, equality, and diversity.
