Job Summary
We are seeking to appoint a Locum Consultant in the field of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, providing flexible cover to the needs of the department for a fixed term period of 12 months. The successful candidate will join Women’s Services Directorate, which is part of the Women’s and Children’s Division of London North West Healthcare NHS Trust. The Directorate includes Maternity, Gynaecology and Neonatal services across multiple hospital sites.

Job Details
Location
The position is based at Northwick Park/Central Middlesex & Ealing hospitals, located at Watford Road, Harrow, HA1 3UJ. The role may require working across multiple hospital sites as needed.
Salary
The position offers a competitive salary ranging from £109,725 to £145,478 per annum, depending on experience and qualifications. This is in line with national consultant pay scales for the NHS.
Contract Type
This is a fixed-term contract for a duration of 12 months. The position may be extended based on operational requirements and mutual agreement.
Working Pattern
The role is full-time (37.5 hours per week). The job plan incorporates 10 programmed activities of which 9 are DCC (Directorate Clinical Commitment) working across Gynaecology & Obstetrics.
About the Role
Operating lists take place on both Ealing and Northwick Park sites, with most Gynaecology operating lists happening at the Ealing site. Clinics occur across all three sites. There is a Gynaecology Direct Referral Unit based on the surgical floor at Northwick Park, which allows emergency referrals from GPs to be assessed and treated within a dedicated gynaecology environment rather than in the Emergency Department.
Ealing hospital runs an Early Pregnancy Unit (EPU), providing additional opportunities for specialized experience in managing early pregnancy complications. The maternity unit delivers approximately 4,700 babies per annum and includes a high-risk Obstetric-led delivery suite and a Midwifery Led Birth Centre.
Main Duties
The post holder will be a key member of the Obstetrics and Gynaecology team. Key responsibilities include providing General Gynaecology services in the Gynaecology direct referral unit as required. The post holder will also be expected to work in a high-risk labour ward covering clinics and theatres.
Each consultant who practices obstetrics and is not part of the resident night rota has a “hot week” on labour ward when their elective activity will be cancelled, requiring them to work 8am-8pm on labour ward for 3 or 4 days every 9 weeks. Consultant hours on labour ward are provided 96 hours per week.
Person Specification
Essential Qualifications
Applicants must possess membership of the Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology (MRCOG) or a qualification of equivalent standard. Essential qualifications include Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) and British Society of Colposcopy and Cervical Pathology (BSCCP) certification. Candidates must also be fully registered Medical Practitioners with the General Medical Council (GMC).
Desirable Qualifications
Desirable qualifications include another higher qualification such as MD, PhD, MRCS or equivalent. Additional desirable qualifications include ATSM (Acute Training Skills Module) in Gynaecology oncology, Labour Ward, or Benign Gynaecology. A qualification in Medical education is also considered desirable.
Essential Experience
The post holder must demonstrate competence in the education and training of specialist registrars. Essential experience includes knowledge of national guidelines for Maternity services, IT/Computer literacy, and being a car driver. Candidates should have experience of teaching and training undergraduates, postgraduates, and junior medical staff.
Essential experience also includes evidence of audit preparation, undertaking and presentation, along with an interest in participating in research and understanding of research and critical appraisal.
Desirable Experience
Desirable experience includes knowledge of the SBL (Safety Bundle) care bundle, organisational experience, ability to implement and develop research projects, and evidence of having carried out research and submitted for publication.
