Princess Street Surgery serves a registered patient population of approximately 7,500 individuals in the Gorseinon area and surrounding communities. We are a forward-thinking training practice that takes pride in developing the next generation of healthcare professionals, including GP Registrars and Foundation Pharmacists. Our clinical team consists of 4 GP Partners, 2 Salaried GPs, 2 Practice Nurses, a Pharmacist, and a Nurse Practitioner, all supported by an experienced administrative team.

Role Responsibilities
The Healthcare Assistant will work as part of our multidisciplinary team within the General Practice setting, supporting the delivery of high-quality, safe, and patient-centred care. The role involves carrying out a range of clinical and administrative duties under the supervision of registered healthcare professionals, contributing to the smooth running of the practice and the wellbeing of our patient population.
Clinical Duties
HCAs play a key role in assisting patients with their health and wellbeing needs, undertaking tasks such as phlebotomy, blood pressure monitoring, ECGs, urinalysis, vaccinations (if trained), Health Checks, wound care, and lifestyle advice. The post holder will also provide essential support to GPs, nurses, and other practice staff by ensuring clinical areas are prepared and maintained to high standards of infection prevention and control.
Core Responsibilities
The HCA will be expected to deliver care in line with agreed protocols, training, and competency frameworks. You will work collaboratively within the practice team to support patients in managing their health, contribute to health promotion, disease prevention, and patient education. Maintaining accurate, timely, and appropriate clinical records is essential, as is participating in ongoing training, appraisal, and service development to ensure continuous improvement of patient care.
Detailed Job Responsibilities
The following are the core responsibilities of the Healthcare Assistant in delivering health services. There may be, on occasion, a requirement to carry out other tasks depending on workload and staffing levels:
Patient Care Services
a. Undertake new patient health checks
b. Deliver and assist clinical staff in the provision of treatment, preventative care, health promotion, long-term condition management and patient education
c. Carry out baseline observations such as pulse oximetry, blood pressure, temperature, pulse rate, recording findings accurately
d. Facilitate routine and 24-hour BP monitoring, advising patients accordingly
e. Carry out ECGs as requested
Clinical Procedures
f. Undertaking basic wound care, dressings and other clinical tasks as required
g. Carry out BMI checks as directed
h. Act as a chaperone as required
i. Ensure specimens are recorded and ready for onward transportation
j. Provide support during minor operations as required
k. When trained, administering B12 injections, flu, covid, pneumonia vaccination under patient Specific Directions
Clinical Environment Management
l. Ensure all clinical rooms are adequately stocked and prepared for each session
m. Ensure clinical waste is removed from clinical areas and sharps bins replaced in accordance with the organisation’s IPC Policy
n. Ensure clinical fridges are cleaned routinely in accordance with extant guidance
o. Recording and monitoring cold chain storage and reporting any abnormalities
Essential Qualifications
Healthcare qualification (NVQ level 3 or 4) or working towards gaining equivalent level. We welcome applications from candidates who are currently working toward their qualifications and can provide support for continuing professional development.
Desirable Qualifications
HCA Care Certificate is desirable but not essential. We provide comprehensive training and support for successful candidates to obtain any necessary additional certifications.
Essential Experience
Experience of working with general public and experience of working in a healthcare setting. International healthcare experience is highly valued and considered equivalent to UK experience.
Desirable Experience
Experience of working in a primary care environment is desirable but not essential. We provide thorough orientation and training to help international candidates adapt to the UK primary care system.
