Hywel Dda University Health Board is seeking a highly qualified Haematology Locum Consultant Specialising in Lymphoma to join our dynamic team at Withybush General Hospital. About the Position
This is a full-time, fixed-term appointment for 12 months within the Haematology department. The successful candidate will be instrumental in developing our Lymphoma subspecialty as part of our ongoing service transformation. You will work alongside a dedicated team of 7 consultants providing comprehensive haematology services across four hospitals in an area of outstanding natural beauty in West Wales.
Key Responsibilities
As a Haematology Locum Consultant, you will be responsible for demonstrating expertise in the management of Lymphoma and General Haematology. The role includes developing this subspecialty across the health board while working alongside generalist consultants. You will participate in an attending and on-call rota for the Haverfordwest site and provide consultative support to the three peripheral sites.
Clinical Duties
You will be expected to participate in 3-4 clinics per week within Lymphoma and General Haematology, with consideration for additional subspecialist workload based on your experience. The position requires involvement in weekly health board-wide MDT meetings and opportunities to join other MDTs from across Wales. You’ll contribute to all aspects of general haematology and haemo-oncology work including departmental meetings and on-call duties.
Working Pattern
The position is full-time with 10 sessions plus 1 SPA (Specialist, Professional, Analytical) session per week. Clinics in other hospital sites will be required, with virtual clinics being an option. The appointee must be someone who can help develop our rural service to ensure excellent patient care across all our sites.

Person Requirements
The ideal candidate will hold full GMC Registration and Licence to Practice, along with valid Certified Advanced Life Support Skills. Essential qualifications include MBBS or equivalent and FRCPath or equivalent. You should have broad-based experience in clinical haematology, knowledge of CPD, competence and expertise in clinical haematology.
Desirable Qualifications
While not essential, desirable qualifications include an appropriate Higher Degree (MD, PhD or MSc), being on the Specialist Register with GMC or having CCT due within 6 months of interview date. Alternatively, CESR or equivalent European Qualifications for Specialist Registration would be considered. Experience of the NHS and additional clinical qualifications are also desirable.
Clinical Governance Requirements
You must demonstrate evidence of participation in clinical audit and understanding the role of audit in improving medical practice. Knowledge of risk management and the annual job planning/appraisal review process would be advantageous. Your commitment to maintaining high standards of clinical governance will be essential in this role.
Research Experience
Essential requirements include experience and knowledge of critical appraisal of evidence to improve clinical outcomes. Desirable elements encompass evidence of initiating, progressing and concluding research projects with publication, as well as holding a Research Degree. Your contribution to advancing haematology research will be valued.
Teaching Responsibilities
You must demonstrate evidence of organising programmes and teaching medical students and junior doctors. Desirable experience includes organisation of further teaching programmes in medical education and “Training the Trainers” experience. Your role in developing the next generation of haematology professionals will be important.
Management Requirements
Essential knowledge includes understanding the management and structure of the NHS. Evidence of management training would be desirable. Your ability to contribute effectively to the management of the haematology service and work within the NHS framework will be crucial.
