About the Role
Exciting opportunities are available in the Northern Care Alliance (NCA) Cellular Pathology department, based at Salford Royal Hospital, for doctors who already are or who are motivated to become sub-specialist Dermatopathologists. We are looking to recruit a Consultant Dermatopathologist or Consultant Histopathologist with a special interest in reporting skin samples. This represents an excellent opportunity for international medical professionals seeking to establish or advance their career in the UK’s National Health Service.
Applicants will demonstrate a commitment to Dermatopathology either via experience, possession of the Diploma in Dermatopathology from the RCPath or equivalent qualification, or a commitment to develop such skills to the level indicated above. The successful candidate will join a dynamic and experienced team of three monospecialist Dermatopathologists delivering high quality diagnostic Dermatopathology services to Dermatology and Plastic Surgery departments.
You will become part of one of the largest Dermatopathology departments in the United Kingdom, providing services to Salford Royal Hospital and Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust, as well as specialist reporting services to nearby Trusts. The Cellular Pathology department at Salford is a strong team of Consultants with additional subspecialisms including neuropathology and upper gastrointestinal pathology.
Key Responsibilities
As a Consultant Dermatopathologist/Histopathologist with skin interest, you will be responsible for delivering high-quality diagnostic services to our Dermatology and Plastic Surgery departments. Your expertise will be crucial in providing accurate and timely diagnoses that directly impact patient care. The department is implementing digital pathology in the near future as part of a Greater Manchester wide strategy, offering opportunities to work with cutting-edge technology.
Dissection is provided by an experienced team of advanced biomedical scientists and staff grade colleagues, allowing you to focus on the diagnostic aspects of your role. The Northern Care Alliance is home to one of the largest Dermatology services in Europe and a regional and supraregional tertiary referral centre, providing exposure to a wide range of complex cases.
You will work alongside supportive and knowledgeable clinical colleagues, many of whom have national and international reputations. The hospital is home to undergraduates from the University of Manchester Medical School and Speciality Trainees from the North West Deanery, offering opportunities for teaching and mentorship.
Person Specification
Essential Qualifications
Certificate of Completion of Training in Histopathology or evidence of equivalent training and experience. Full and specialist registration with the General Medical Council with a valid licence to practice or eligible for registration within six months of interview. FRCPath or equivalent qualification is also required.
Applicants that are UK trained must also be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview. Applicants that are non-UK trained will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT.
UK experience in Histopathology is essential for this role. All applicants must have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English that are adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues.
Desirable Qualifications
Post Graduate Degree such as MD, PhD, MSc is desirable. Evidence of Accredited Clinical & Educational Supervision of Medical Learners would be an advantage. Attendance at teaching courses is also considered desirable.
For international candidates, the following English language requirements apply: either undergraduate medical training in English; or IELTS scores of Overall 7, Speaking 7, Listening 6, Reading 6, Writing 6; or Occupational English Test (OET) certificate showing grade ‘B’ in each testing area (speaking, listening, reading and writing).
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Essential requirements include appropriate, significant experience in Dermatopathology with a commitment to work towards the Diploma in Dermatopathology from the RCPath if not already a holder. A good understanding of Clinical Governance and evidence of audit work where this has brought about change is also required.
Desirable skills include holding the Diploma in Dermatopathology from the RCPath or equivalent, research skills with publication of articles, evidence of participation in research, and relevant peer-reviewed papers or other publications. Management skills including evidence of development and management of change, ability to manage risk, and understanding of management in the Health Service context are also valued.
Teaching and Communication
Experience of teaching juniors, medical students and other healthcare professionals is essential. You should be empathetic and sensitive to patients’ needs, able to explain things clearly – particularly complex or sensitive information, and able to influence and persuade effectively.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required to enable you to write and present reports effectively. You must demonstrate the ability to build and maintain effective teams and maintain a positive attitude towards members of the wider healthcare team.
