Job Overview
The Christie NHS FT is seeking a Consultant to join their Clinical Oncology department. This is a new post for 10 Programmed Activities (PAs) per week, focusing on Clinical Oncology management and treatment within the HPB (Hepatobiliary) and Colorectal Disease Groups. The successful candidate will work alongside multidisciplinary teams to provide comprehensive cancer care services.

Key Responsibilities
The appointee will develop expertise in colorectal oncology, delivering both radiotherapy and systemic therapy. You will be involved in all aspects of radiotherapy delivery and encouraged to engage with teams supporting advanced treatments like SABR (Stereotactic Ablative Radiotherapy), Proton therapy, or MR Linac development. The well-supported team structure facilitates cross-cover of clinical work, with training and mentorship available if needed.
Colorectal Oncology Duties
As a Consultant in this specialty, you will be expected to take on leadership, training, and management roles within the Clinical Oncology department. Examples include chairing clinical committees, serving as Clinical Lead for clinical pathways, or representing the department at Trust meetings. You will join five existing clinical oncology consultants covering colorectal malignancies.
HPB Oncology Duties
You will provide consultant-level care for patients with HPB malignancies, including pancreatic cancer, biliary tract cancers (cholangiocarcinoma and gallbladder cancer), and hepatocellular carcinoma, as well as abdominal oligometastatic tumors. This includes expertise in advanced radiotherapy techniques, systemic therapy, and both outpatient and inpatient care.
Equipment and Technology
The Christie’s radiotherapy department includes state-of-the-art equipment such as IMRT, IGRT, and 4-D adaptive radiotherapy capabilities. While they do offer a Brachytherapy service, it is not required for this role. The hospital is also developing advanced treatment options including SABR, Proton therapy, and MR Linac technologies.
Person Specification
Essential Qualifications and Experience
Applicants must hold MRCP or equivalent qualification and have a Certificate of completed specialist training or equivalent (or be within 6 months of CCT by interview). You must be registered with the GMC with a license to practice and either have a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) with proposed CCT date within 6 months of interview, or a Certificate of Eligibility for Specialist Registration (CESR).
Essential Experience
You must demonstrate Advanced Trainee Competencies in Colorectal and HPB cancers. The post requires experience in delivering radiotherapy and systemic therapy, with the ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team and contribute to departmental leadership and management activities.
Desirable Attributes
While not required, research experience would be advantageous. Knowledge of advanced imaging modalities, adaptive radiotherapy, and awareness of ongoing College Reforms would also be beneficial for this position.
Support and Team Structure
All Disease Group consultants work within a supportive multidisciplinary team structure. You will collaborate with Nurse Clinicians/Advanced Clinical Practitioners (8.65 WTE), Clinical Nurse Specialists (7.66 WTE), Clinical/research Fellows (1.8 WTE), Specialist Trainees (4.4 WTE), and have access to Pharmacists, Research Nurses, and Specialist Radiographers (2 WTE).
