About the Position

We are seeking an outstanding Neuroanaesthetic consultant to join our dynamic and innovative anaesthetic department at University Hospitals Sussex. This is a new post resulting from the expansion of our neurosurgical and interventional neuroradiology services following our relocation to the state-of-the-art Louisa Martindale Building in 2023.

Job Overview

The successful candidate will join a team of 12 neuroanaesthesia specialists providing anaesthesia for neurosurgical, spinal and interventional neuroradiology procedures in our new 3Ts Neurosciences Centre. The position offers a mixture of specialist neurosurgical lists, neuroradiology and flexible general anaesthetic work.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

As a Neuroanaesthetic consultant, you will be responsible for delivering anaesthesia for a wide range of intracranial, neuroradiological and spinal procedures. You will have opportunities to lead service development and quality improvement projects, participate in education and training of medical and non-medical colleagues, and contribute to our teaching commitments with our associated medical school.

On Call Commitment

The position includes on call commitment to the emergency neurosurgical service at the Royal Sussex County Hospital, supported by 4 tiers of residents. Each half day session is 5 hours (1.25 PA), and non-neurosurgical cases are covered by other on call consultant groups.

Person Specification

Essential Qualifications and Experience

  • Basic Medical Degree
  • FRCA or its recognised equivalent
  • Full and specialist registration with the GMC or eligibility within six months of interview
  • Advanced training in neuro anaesthesia including intracranial, spinal and neurointerventional radiology procedures
  • Proven history of leading perioperative QI projects
  • Evidence of having undertaken development to improve understanding of equalities issues

Desirable Qualifications and Experience

  • Higher Degree, preferably related to anaesthesia
  • Experience in other subspecialities such as major trauma or regional anaesthesia

  • Clinical expertise in specialist monitoring techniques relevant to neuroanaesthesia

Professional Registration and Visa Requirements

Applicants must have current UK professional registration with the General Medical Council (GMC). If you trained outside the UK, you must provide evidence that your qualifications are equivalent to the UK CCT. The Trust will provide a Certificate of Sponsorship for eligible candidates, but applicants are responsible for ensuring they meet all UK visa requirements.

This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975. A Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check will be required to verify any previous criminal convictions.
