Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a highly qualified Consultant Rheumatologist with a specialist interest in Behcet’s Disease for a full-time position at Aintree University Hospital. This is an exceptional opportunity to join one of the UK’s leading Rheumatology departments and contribute to a National Centre of Excellence for Behcet’s Disease management.

About the Role

This unique 10 programmed activities (PA) post offers the chance to work within a large multidisciplinary team at the University Hospitals of Liverpool Group (UHLG). The Rheumatology department has been formed through the merger of legacy departments at Broadgreen and Aintree University Hospitals, creating an environment rich with expertise and collaborative opportunities.

The Behcet’s Service

The Behet’s Service within our department is one of only three National Centres of Excellence in England, commissioned as a Highly Specialised Service by NHS England. Our Liverpool Centre currently provides care for 700 patients with Behet’s Disease from across the country. We operate on a shared care, hub and spoke model, collaborating with local hospitals as needed to provide comprehensive patient care.

Key Responsibilities

The post holder will work alongside rheumatology colleagues to deliver outpatient services and consult on inpatient referrals. Key duties include conducting general rheumatology clinics, running one specialist Behet’s clinic (with potential to expand to two based on clinical interests), providing support for the Behet’s service including high-cost drug approvals and telephone advice, and contributing to service development initiatives.

Rotational Duties

The position includes rotational responsibilities with a 1:6 rota as consultant of the week (9am-5pm) to cover referrals, and a 1:6 rota for managing the e-RS system (triaging new referrals) and providing Advice and Guidance. Additionally, participation in weekly Rheumatology MDT, monthly vasculitis MDT, and monthly specialist regional MDT is required.

Person Specification

Essential Qualifications

  • MBChB or equivalent medical qualification
  • MRCP or equivalent
  • CCST in rheumatology (or within 6 months of completion)
  • Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC)

Essential Experience

  • Strong background in all aspects of general rheumatology
  • Experience with systemic immune-mediated inflammatory disorders such as CTDs, SLE or vasculitis
  • Understanding of management responsibilities of a consultant role
  • Previous experience teaching students, junior doctors or PAMs

Research Requirements

Candidates must have experience of clinical research as a Sub/Co-Investigator or in translational research, along with understanding of Good Clinical Practice (GCP) principles and certification. Publications in peer-reviewed journals are desirable.

While prior experience managing Behcet’s disease is not essential, the post-holder will work alongside the current service lead, Professor Robert Moots, to develop the necessary expertise with the opportunity to take on a lead role in due course.
