The position is based at Palmers Community Hospital in Jarrow, South Tyneside. Job Details

This is a permanent part-time position for 8 sessions per week (equivalent to 4 days). The salary ranges from £109,725 to £145,478 per year, pro rata for part-time work. The post is subject to the terms and conditions of the NHS Consultant Contract.

Main Duties

As a Consultant Psychiatrist, you will provide clinical leadership to the service and assume responsibility for patients under your care. This includes taking on Responsible Clinician status for patients subject to Community Treatment Orders and ensuring compliance with the Mental Health Act and CQC requirements. You will participate in patient assessments and develop comprehensive care plans addressing psychiatric, physical, and social needs.

Specialist Responsibilities

The post holder will work with Community Psychiatric Nurses (CPNs) and integrated team psychologists to provide medical expertise for Community Treatment Team (CTT) patients across psychosis and non-psychosis pathways. You will also offer medical input to the Step-up hub team in South Tyneside, providing enhanced interventions for patients with complex needs in stepped care or supported accommodation.

Person Specification – Qualifications and Training

Essential qualifications include MBBS (or equivalent), inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register (General Psychiatry) or eligibility for inclusion, and approval under Section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act 1983. Approved Clinician status is also required. Desirable qualifications include MRCPsych or equivalent, postgraduate qualifications in relevant fields, and training in educational supervision and appraisal.

Knowledge Requirements

You must have up-to-date knowledge in the field of Psychiatry and awareness of current issues and controversies in service provision, mental health policy, and legislation. A desirable qualification is an area of special interest relevant to the post, demonstrated by publications or presentations to learned societies.

Experience Requirements

Essential experience includes multidisciplinary team working, wide clinical experience in general adult psychiatry across different settings, and experience with clinical audit. Desirable experience involves multiagency work with service users, carers, and voluntary agencies, as well as experience in service management or development.
