Position Details
This Consultant Psychiatrist role focuses on providing high-quality mental health care for adults with severe and enduring mental health problems within the community setting. Location and Facilities
The successful candidate will be based at the modern Irwell Unit within Fairfield General Hospital in Bury, Greater Manchester. Bury is a vibrant town with excellent transport links to Manchester city centre and the surrounding areas, making it an ideal location for those relocating to the UK.
Salary and Benefits Package
We offer an attractive salary range of £109,725 to £145,478 per annum pro rata, depending on experience. This competitive package includes:

Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must be on the GMC’s Specialist Register or eligible for inclusion, or be within six months of the anticipated award of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) in General Adult Psychiatry at the time of interview. International medical graduates must have their qualifications verified and meet the GMC’s requirements for specialist registration.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
The Consultant Psychiatrist will provide comprehensive psychiatric care within the community mental health team, including:
– Conducting thorough psychiatric assessments and formulating treatment plans
– Providing expert medication management and monitoring
– Leading multidisciplinary team meetings and case discussions
– Offering specialist advice to team colleagues and other professionals
– Participating in service development and quality improvement initiatives
Clinical Leadership
The post holder will work closely with other Consultants and team members to ensure coherent and high-quality mental health care for adults within the Bury area. This includes contributing to local service user and carer groups and supporting the development of innovative service models.
Team Structure and Support
Bury operates an Inpatient-Outpatient model (New Ways of Working) staffed by six full-time Consultants in Adult Psychiatry. Each Community Consultant is allocated a Junior Doctor (NW Deanery training schemes) with support from advanced practitioners and sessional input from a specialty doctor.
Professional Development
We offer ample opportunities for professional development and opportunities for additional work for additional Programmed Activities (PAs) through negotiation. The Trust has strong teaching commitments, and candidates will be expected to contribute to the teaching of medical and nursing staff.
Essential Qualifications and Experience
Applicants must possess:
– MBChB or equivalent medical qualification
– Must be on the GMC Specialist Register or be eligible to be on the GMC Specialist Register
– Higher psychiatric training or its equivalent
– Section 12(2) Approval under Mental Health Act 1983 or be eligible for approval
– Approved Clinician status (or eligible for same)
– Evidence of teaching and training abilities
Desirable Qualifications
While not essential, the following qualifications would be advantageous:
– Possession of MRCPsych or equivalent qualification
– Other postgraduate degrees (e.g., MSc, MD, MRCP)
– Possession of CCT or be within 6 months of achieving this
– CCT in General Adult Psychiatry
– Experience in detention of patients under The MHA (1983)
– Experience of writing reports for Mental Health Review Tribunals
– Current or past educational supervisor experience
