Job Overview
The Urology service at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton has an exciting opportunity to appoint a motivated Urology Consultant Surgeon with an interest in female and functional urology. The successful candidate will join a forward-thinking and progressive team of 14 Urology professionals across both sites, supported by high-quality colleagues in the wider multidisciplinary team (MDT), to provide an excellent service within our Urology Department based at Royal Derby Hospital.

Service Population
The Urology service at University Hospitals of Derby and Burton serves the population of Staffordshire, Burton Town, the city of Derby and surrounding areas, representing a population of well over 1 million people. This provides an excellent opportunity for international medical professionals to make a significant impact on a large and diverse patient population while developing their expertise in a supportive NHS environment.
Key Facilities
The UHDB Urology Service across Royal Derby Hospitals and Queens Hospital Burton has dedicated urology outpatient facilities. A brand-new day unit for diagnostic working including prostate biopsies and urodynamic studies at QHB and a nine-theatre suite, with dedicated urology theatres equipped with HD Audio-visual facilities (STORZ OR1) at RDH. These state-of-the-art facilities provide an excellent working environment for international medical professionals relocating to the UK.
Job Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering a full range of outpatient and inpatient services at base sites and outreach clinics. You will also provide emergency urology surgery as part of the relevant base site Consultant on-call rota. The final job plan will be agreed between the successful candidate and the Assistant Clinical Director but will include dedicated outpatient clinics for benign and cancer patients at base site and outreach sites, inpatient theatre sessions and day case sessions.
Working Pattern
This is a full-time permanent position with the expectation of flexibility to work across all sites of University Hospitals of Derby and Burton Foundation Trust should the need arise. The role includes dedicated time for administration, supporting professional activities, ward rounds and emergency work. This flexible approach ensures that international candidates can contribute effectively across the trust’s services while adapting to the UK’s healthcare system.
Essential Qualifications
To be considered for this position, candidates must hold MBBS / MBChB or equivalent, FRCS or equivalent higher qualification, and have Life Support Qualifications (ALS). You must have Full GMC Registration with a license to practice at time of application. This includes either being on the GMC Specialist Register for General Surgery Specialty or within 6 months of receipt of Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) at time of interview.
Clinical Experience Requirements
Candidates must demonstrate adequate training and experience in Urology Surgery with evidence of independent clinical practice. You should have up-to-date clinical knowledge in the relevant specialty with evidence of an understanding of its application. Additionally, you must have a minimum of 6 months NHS experience and a minimum of 6 months experience in surgery to be considered for this role.
Management Commitment
All applicants must show commitment to Continuing Professional Development and the requirements of clinical governance. While not essential, attendance at a management course for consultants would be advantageous for international candidates looking to progress their careers within the UK’s NHS structure.
Teaching and Research Requirements
Candidates must provide evidence and experience of supervising and teaching resident doctors and medical students, with the ability and experience of teaching clinical skills. You should also have experience of and commitment to clinical audit and/or Quality Improvement Projects (QIP), with evidence and ability to assess and apply evidence-based research into everyday clinical practice.
