Salary and Benefits
The position offers a competitive salary ranging from £109,725 to £145,478 per annum, paid according to the Hospital Medical and Dental Staff pay scheme. Main Duties of the Job
The main duties of the role rotate between ‘hot week’ and ‘cold week’ operated on a 1:9 cycle, alongside other job-planned clinical and non-clinical activities. Hot week runs Monday to Friday 08:30hrs – 18:00hrs with duties including supervising day-to-day management of labour ward, conducting ward rounds in Labour, Maternity and Gynaecology wards, and performing or supervising emergency gynaecological cases on CEPOD lists.
Cold Week Responsibilities
During cold week, the consultant will undertake three elective caesarean section lists per week (Monday, Wednesday, and Friday) and complete electronic advice and guidance from GPs, triaging referrals and reviewing urgent results to prevent delays in cancer pathways. This structured approach ensures a balanced workload while maintaining high standards of patient care.
Clinical Activities
During the other seven weeks, the consultant is required to perform approximately 4-5 programmed activities (PA) clinical sessions. These sessions may include General Antenatal Clinic, Gynaecology Clinic, Theatre work, or any specialized clinic of interest. This flexibility allows consultants to develop and maintain their specialist interests while contributing to the overall service provision.
On-call Commitment
The post includes a 1:8 weekday on-call commitment and 1:9 weekend on-call commitment. This rotational on-call system ensures that consultants have adequate rest periods while maintaining 24/7 coverage for emergency obstetric and gynaecological services. The trust recognizes the importance of work-life balance and has structured these commitments accordingly.
Professional Development
The successful applicant will have 1.5 Core SPA (Supporting Programmed Activities) job-planned time for CPD, revalidation, appraisal, and departmental meetings. The Clinical Director will confirm the job plan with the successful candidate, and all consultants are supported to take part in an Annual Appraisal. The trust is committed to the ongoing professional development of all its medical staff.
Person Specification – Education & Qualifications
Essential qualifications include MRCOG or equivalent, full doctors GMC registration with Licence to Practise, and two appropriate ATSMs (Additional Training and Skills Modules) or equivalent experience in Obstetrics and Gynaecology. Candidates should ideally be on the Specialist Register or be eligible to be on the specialist register within six months of the date of the Advisory Appointments Committee (AAC).
Desirable Qualifications
Experience in any of the following ATSMs or their equivalent can be beneficial: Labour Ward Practice, Benign Abdominal Surgery ATSM, Hysteroscopy, Colposcopy, Urogynaecology, Advanced Antenatal Practice, Maternal Medicine, or Fetal Medicine. While not essential, these additional qualifications would enhance the applicant’s profile and potential contribution to the service.
Person Specification – Training Skills
Essential requirements include possessing training and education skills to teach junior medical, nursing and midwifery staff. The successful candidate must demonstrate leadership qualities and provide learning opportunities within the clinical environment for junior colleagues. This role requires someone who is committed to education and mentorship as fundamental aspects of medical practice.
Person Specification – Experience & Knowledge
Essential experience includes a wide general obstetrics and gynaecology training background and good experience at running labour ward and Emergency Gynaecology at a senior level. Desirable experience includes either risk management experience or fetal monitoring leadership. The trust is looking for a consultant with comprehensive experience who can provide expert clinical leadership.
Person Specification – Communication Skills
Essential communication requirements include excellent communication skills both oral and written, ability to establish good working relationships with staff, and ability to communicate well with patients. The successful candidate must act with integrity and be willing to seek timely assistance from colleagues and discuss clinical issues when appropriate. Advanced communication skills training is considered desirable.
Person Specification – Management Experience
Essential management requirements include good organisational skills and time management, preparedness to challenge/correct poor performance, and taking responsibility for personal and professional development.
