We are delighted to offer a Consultant in General Adult Psychiatry position at Elmleigh Inpatient unit with a generous £30,000 Golden Hello to support successful candidates in taking the next step in their careers. These posts are situated within the Secure, Acute and Crisis Division, offering a unique opportunity to work in a comprehensive mental health service environment.
Elmleigh in Havant delivers inpatient services for the region with Ruby Ward (16-bed Acute Female Unit) and Sapphire Ward (17-bed Acute Male Unit). The posts primarily serve patients from Portsmouth but also extend to wider Hampshire. Post holders will collaborate closely with other consultants across the Acute Care Pathway and Community Mental Health Teams (CMHTs).
The acute care pathway includes two inpatient units – Elmleigh and Hollybank, complemented by a 24/7 Crisis Resolution and Home Treatment Team (CRHTT). Additional services include three Community Mental Health Teams, Early Intervention in Psychosis, and the Liaison Psychiatry Team at PHU, composed of nursing, OT, social work, medical, and psychology professionals.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will be responsible for the clinical care, treatment, and Responsible Clinician (RC) duties for patients on the acute inpatient wards at Elmleigh. They will provide clinical leadership across both Ruby and Sapphire wards, working closely with the multidisciplinary team to ensure high-quality patient care.
Based at Elmleigh in Havant, the post covers two inpatient areas, working alongside one other full-time Consultant, two middle grade doctors, and three junior doctors. The leadership team includes a Band 8A Modern Matron and two Band 7 Ward Managers.
Across the wider Portsmouth, South East Hampshire Acute and Crisis pathway, leadership includes a Band 8A Pathways & Rehab Matron, a Band 7 Pathways Team Lead, a Band 8A CRHTT Matron, two Band 7 Team Leads, and a Band 8A Crisis Pathway Manager.
The service benefits from strong psychology input, including access to the Complex Care and Community (CCC) intensive support programme, and dedicated medical staffing. This post is designed to promote high-quality care, support staff wellbeing, enable clinical supervision and teaching, ensure continuity of care, and contribute to service development.
An off-site Supporting Professional Activity (SPA) session per week is included in this role, and consultant colleagues across the Acute Wards and CRHTT collaborate to provide comprehensive cover for annual and study leave periods.

Essential qualifications:
- Full Registration with the General Medical Council
- MRCPsych or recognised equivalent
- Eligible for inclusion in the Specialist Register or within 6 months of CCT at time of interview. CCT in general adult psychiatry.
- Approved under section 12(2) of the Mental Health Act 1983.
