About the Position
We are seeking a committed and enthusiastic Consultant in Diabetes & Endocrinology to join our team of 6 specialists providing care across West Suffolk. This is a permanent, full-time position based at the West Suffolk Foundation Trust site. The successful candidate will provide inpatient care on the 33-bed Diabetes/Endocrinology and General Medicine ward G3, along with outpatient clinics at our site and integrated care hub locations.
Key Responsibilities
The post-holder will be responsible for providing expert clinical care in diabetes and endocrinology, including the management of acute inpatients and outpatients. You will need to demonstrate depth and breadth of experience in acute ward-based and outpatient medicine. The role includes supervising junior doctors, teaching clinical skills, and contributing to service development and audit activities.
Person Specification
Education & Qualifications
Essential requirements include MRCP or equivalent, full GMC registration, and entry on the GMC specialist register in Diabetes/Endocrinology and General (Internal) Medicine. You should be within six months of attaining Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training at the time of interview. A PhD or MD is desirable but not essential.
Clinical Experience
Candidates must have clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for UK CCT in both General Medicine and Diabetes/Endocrinology. You should have experience managing acute medical inpatients and outpatients, with the ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care. Experience in specialized diabetes clinics, including insulin pump therapy and pregnancy management, is desirable.
Teaching & Management
The role requires experience of supervising FY1s, FY2s, StRs, and SpRs (or equivalent), with the ability to teach clinical skills and demonstrate experience delivering teaching. You should be able to advise on the efficient running of the Diabetes/Endocrinology service, manage day-to-day delivery, and lead strategic developments in service delivery.
Personal Attributes
We are looking for candidates with good personal interactive communication skills, the ability to work effectively as a team member, and a caring attitude toward patients. You should be self-motivated, enthusiastic, and committed to maintaining the highest clinical standards. A thorough understanding of “Good Medical Practice” from the GMC is essential.
Remuneration & Benefits
The position offers a competitive salary ranging from £109,725 to £145,478 per annum, pro rata. This is a permanent, full-time contract with the NHS, which includes a comprehensive pension scheme, generous annual leave, access to NHS occupational health services, and opportunities for continuing professional development.
