Main Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be expected to work with the existing team to provide a comprehensive 7-day cardiology service, including on-call duties. You will provide expert clinical care for both inpatients and outpatients, covering diagnosis, treatment, and aftercare. The role involves facilitating urgent transfers of patients to Oxford University Hospital (OUH) when necessary, as well as leading and developing specialist cardiology services.
You will collaborate closely with a multidisciplinary team including consultants, nurses, physiotherapists, and allied health professionals. Active engagement in the development and delivery of echocardiography and heart failure services is essential, working closely with physiologists. The post holder will also contribute to teaching, training, and research initiatives within the department.
Inpatient work and on-call responsibilities include participation in a 1:9 ‘Consultant of the Week’ rota for general cardiology. During these weeks, your job plan will be modified to undertake ward rounds, provide advice and guidance, handle GP referrals, and offer support for cardiology referrals. There is also a 1:8 weekend ward round commitment in the Coronary Care Unit (CCU)/Cardiology Ward and reviews of inpatients, including those in the Medical Admissions Unit.

Professional Qualifications
Essential qualifications include MB BS or equivalent, MRCP or equivalent, and entry on the Specialist Register in Cardiology with a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT or equivalent), or expected within six months of the interview date. BSE/ESC accreditation in Echocardiography is essential, along with full training and experience in advanced echocardiography (TOE and DSE).
Desirable qualifications include a higher medical degree (MD/PhD) and additional imaging qualifications such as CT or MRI. These additional qualifications would be beneficial for supporting other subspecialty imaging interests, subject to a successful business case.
Clinical Knowledge and Skills
Essential requirements include evidence of broad training and experience in all aspects of general cardiovascular medicine, cardiac imaging, and heart failure. You must demonstrate the ability to make decisions at a consultant level and offer expert clinical opinions on a broad range of emergency and elective cardiology problems. The ability to manage complex clinical situations and prioritize clinical need is also essential.
Desirable attributes include consultant-level experience working as an independent, senior decision-maker and expertise in multimodality cardiac imaging. These skills would be valuable in developing advanced imaging services within the department.
Teaching and Training Skills
You will need to provide evidence of contributions to teaching and training of undergraduates and postgraduates, as well as demonstrate the ability to motivate and develop both medical and non-medical staff. A willingness and ability to contribute to departmental and Trust teaching programmes is essential.
Desirable attributes include an education/teaching qualification and experience in formal educational roles, which would be beneficial for those interested in developing their academic career within the Trust.
Communication and Interpersonal Skills
Essential requirements include the ability to communicate effectively with patients and colleagues, gaining their trust and confidence. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential, along with the ability to work constructively within a team environment.
Leadership Qualities
You will need to demonstrate evidence of your ability to lead clinical teams at the level of a consultant in a teaching hospital. This includes enthusiasm and the ability to inspire enthusiasm in others, commitment to developing new services, and the ability to develop, present, and operationalize coherent ideas for service development and delivery.
Additional desirable leadership attributes include evidence of leadership and innovation in the development of clinical services, experience of formal leadership roles, and formal leadership training or qualification.
