Consultant in Acute General Medicine – Hospital Medical and Dental Staff Grade
Salary and Benefits
£110,240 to £160,951 per annum, depending on experience and qualifications. This competitive salary package reflects the seniority of the position and includes comprehensive NHS benefits including pension scheme, annual leave entitlement, and professional development opportunities.

Main Duties and Responsibilities
The successful candidate will play a crucial role in developing and delivering all aspects of the Acute Medicine service through the Emergency Department, CDU, and SDEC. Key responsibilities include providing acute assessment and treatment of medical patients presenting to the hospital’s front door services, offering effective leadership to multidisciplinary staff members, and ensuring seamless pathways of care for patients.
Clinical Leadership
You will provide clinical supervision of SDEC and Emergency Department medical patients, ensuring close cooperation with other medical consultant colleagues to develop integrated care pathways. The role involves working closely with GP colleagues to direct patients to the most appropriate service and developing “hot clinics” as alternatives to admission.
Team Development
The position requires ensuring development, support, and training for nurse consultant and nurse practitioner colleagues, while also providing necessary training and support to junior doctors. You will be part of a team of 4.3 WTE Acute Medicine Consultants and will support the expansion of this service both in hospital and community settings.
Essential Qualifications
Professional Registration
Full GMC Registration and Licence to Practice is essential. Candidates must be on the Specialist Register with GMC or have CCT due within 6 months of interview date. Alternatively, CESR or equivalent European Qualifications for Specialist Registration are acceptable.
Clinical Certifications
MRCP or equivalent qualification is required, along with valid Certified Advanced Life Support Skills. These certifications ensure the highest standards of patient care and emergency response capabilities.
Essential Clinical Experience
Candidates must possess broad-based experience in Acute/General Medicine, with knowledge of UK hospital systems (or equivalent). Expertise in acute and general medicine is essential, along with competence in the field and knowledge/participation in Continuing Professional Development (CPD).
Desirable Qualifications and Experience
While not essential, appropriate Higher Degrees (MD, PhD, or MSc or equivalent) are desirable. Experience within the NHS system is advantageous, as is wider experience, research, and training in providing sub-specialty services. Evidence of above-average performance and additional clinical qualifications will strengthen applications.
Clinical Governance and Research
Essential requirements include evidence of participation in clinical audit and understanding the role of audit in improving medical practice. Experience and knowledge of critical appraisal of evidence to improve clinical outcomes are also required. Desirable attributes include knowledge of risk management, annual job planning/appraisal review process, evidence of initiating research projects with publication, and research degrees.
Teaching and Management Experience
Evidence of organizing programs and teaching medical students and junior doctors is essential. Knowledge of NHS management and structure is required. Desirable attributes include organization of further teaching programs in medical education, “Training the Trainers” experience, and evidence of management training.
Certificate of Sponsorship
