Job Summary
The Department of Histopathology at Torbay and South Devon NHS Foundation Trust is housed in a self-contained unit opposite the outpatient department. It comprises separate histopathology, cytopathology and immunohistology laboratories; a secretarial office; five consultant offices; one senior MLSO office; and a tea-room. The mortuary is nearby on the ground floor of the main hospital block and has undergone significant updating with increased storage capacity.
Department Facilities
All consultants have their own offices equipped with modern microscopes, video capture technology, VDU displays, and networked PCs. The main laboratory features a large multiheaded teaching/consultation microscope. The department utilizes two Benchmark Ultra analysers for immunohistochemically stains, with a capacity of up to 180 slides per day.
Technical Infrastructure
The laboratory computer system is part of the integrated hospital system and currently uses Winpath (Clinisys), with plans to transition to EPIC/Beaker in December 2025. Molecular biological studies on tumor samples are performed in Bristol, Birmingham, and Exeter, demonstrating the department’s collaborative approach to complex cases.
Main Duties
The primary responsibilities include taking an equal share with other consultants in providing a comprehensive histopathology and cytopathology reporting service, including work generated by bowel cancer screening programmes. Additionally, the post holder will share in the provision of the autopsy service, with coroner’s cases performed at the behest of the coroner.
Administrative Responsibilities
Consultants share in the administrative duties of the department, with opportunities to take on the post of Head of Department/Budget Holder on a mutually compatible basis. All consultants may also apply for the position of Clinical Director of Pathology, typically tenable for three years.
Professional Development
The post holder is expected to participate in Continuing Professional Development in accordance with Royal College of Pathologist Guidelines. This includes involvement in medical audit, clinical governance, UKAS accreditation duties, and preparation for revalidation as required.
Quality Assurance
Consultants participate in regional (Wessex and Southwest Histopathology) and National Bowel Cancer Screening EQA schemes, as well as local internal quality control schemes within the department. There are also opportunities to cover for colleagues during unforeseen short periods of absence.
Teaching and Research
Opportunities exist to participate in teaching and research activities. Some teaching of undergraduate medical students is performed for the Peninsula Medical Schools, with honorary University Fellowships potentially associated with this role. While there are no histopathology trainees within the department, research is often conducted in collaboration with colleagues in other disciplines.
