Development of Whipps Cross Hospital
Whipps Cross Hospital serves a local population with a high degree of frailty and is being developed as a centre for Geriatric medicine within the Barts Health Group. In 2021, Whipps Cross Hospital became a centre of excellence for fragility fracture care, leading to an expansion in the workforce required to revolutionize care for these patients and other orthopaedic patients with fragility fractures.

Main Duties of the Job
The successful candidate will join a growing team and develop new models of working and services that support all older people attending the hospital and within the local community. The role involves working with a high degree of frailty and contributing to the development of Geriatric medicine as a specialism within the Barts Health Group.
Orthogeriatrics Focus
As part of the development of Whipps Cross as a centre for frailty, the hospital became a centre of excellence for fragility fracture care in 2021. The Consultant Geriatrician with an interest in Orthogeriatrics will play a key role in expanding services for these patients and other orthopaedic patients with fragility fractures, revolutionizing care pathways and improving outcomes.
Qualifications – Essential
Must be on the GMC specialist register for Geriatric Medicine or within six months of CCT. The CESR route is also acceptable. Candidates must hold full GMC Registration with license to practice. Higher specialist training in Geriatrics and G(I)Medicine is essential, along with broad experience in these fields.
Qualifications – Desirable
Evidence of participation in research (such as peer-reviewed publications) is desirable. An appropriate higher degree (e.g., MD, PhD or equivalent) is also considered advantageous. The ability to organise and deliver a teaching program is another desirable qualification for this position.
Experience – Essential
Candidates must have higher specialist training in Geriatrics and G(I)Medicine, along with broad experience in these fields. A current ALS certificate is essential. Experience of supervising medical staff and the ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team are also required.
Experience – Desirable
Experience in service development is desirable for this role. The ability to organise and deliver a teaching program is considered advantageous. Candidates with experience in research and academic activities are particularly encouraged to apply.
Knowledge Requirements
Detailed knowledge of Geriatrics and G(I)M and of the specialist skills required for this post is essential. Candidates should demonstrate knowledge of multidisciplinary clinical audit and a commitment to improving quality of care to patients. Understanding of modern medical curricula and commitment to life-long learning is also required.
Skills Requirements
The ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, patients, relatives, GPs, nurses, and other agencies is essential. Candidates should be able to teach medical students and junior medical and nursing staff. Good leadership skills and a flexible, co-operative approach to colleagues are also required for this position.
Other Requirements
Candidates must be self-motivated with an enquiring, critical approach to work. They should have enthusiasm and the ability to work under pressure. A willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional, or national level is expected. Candidates must be prepared to live within 10 miles or 30 minutes of Whipps Cross Hospital.
