Job Summary and Overview
Pennine Care NHS Foundation Trust is looking to recruit a full-time substantive General Adult Consultant Psychiatrist for the North Sector, based in Mossley & Stalybridge. This exciting opportunity offers a competitive salary of £109,725 to £145,478 per year (pro rata), with the potential for career development within a supportive NHS environment.
The post is based at Tameside General Hospital with the North Community Mental Health Team (CMHT) located at Trust Headquarters. The service operates in a sectorised model and is staffed by three Consultants. This position has a North West Deanery Core Trainee and a Less Than Full Time (LTFT) Associate Community Psychiatrist allocated to it.
This is an exciting time to join the Trust, with numerous opportunities to contribute to organisational development and service redesign. Tameside has a strong teaching commitment, and candidates will be expected to contribute to the education of medical and nursing staff as well as 4th-year medical students. There are close links with ongoing research projects, and Consultants contribute to local service user and carer groups.
Main Duties of the Position
The successful candidate will be responsible for providing high-quality mental health care for working-aged adults with severe and enduring mental health problems, both in inpatient and outpatient settings. You will work closely with the North CMHT to ensure coherent and high-quality mental health care delivery across the sector.
You will collaborate with other Consultants to support service development and attend local and divisional service development meetings. Additionally, you will be expected to contribute to teaching and training activities, participate in research or service evaluation projects, and maintain continuous professional development.
The role requires excellent clinical skills using a bio-psycho-social perspective and wide medical knowledge. You will need to demonstrate the ability to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty, make evidence-based decisions, and fulfill your duties under the Mental Health Act (MHA) and Mental Capacity Act (MCA).

Person Specification – Qualifications
Essential
You must hold an MB BS or equivalent medical qualification. This is a prerequisite for registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) and for practicing psychiatry in the UK.
Desirable
While not essential, additional qualifications such as a higher degree in medical education, clinical research, or management would be advantageous. MRCPsych membership or other additional clinical qualifications would also strengthen your application.
Person Specification – Eligibility Requirements
Essential
You must be fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment. You must be included on the GMC Specialist Register or be able to achieve this within six months of appointment. You must have approved clinician status or be able to achieve this within 3 months of appointment, and be approved under S12 or be able to achieve this within 3 months of appointment.
Desirable
It would be beneficial to be in good standing with the GMC with respect to warnings and conditions on practice. International applicants should note that they will need to obtain full GMC registration as part of their visa sponsorship process.
Person Specification – Transport Requirements
For this role, you must hold and be willing to use a valid UK driving licence or provide evidence of a suitable alternative method of transport. This requirement is due to the nature of the work, which may involve travel between different sites and community locations across the sector.
Person Specification – Clinical Skills, Knowledge & Experience
Essential
You must have excellent knowledge in psychiatry, particularly in the general adult specialty. Strong clinical skills using a bio-psycho-social perspective and wide medical knowledge are essential. You must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills in English and be able to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty.
The ability to make decisions based on evidence and experience, including the contribution of others, is crucial. You must be able to meet your statutory duties under the Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act.
Desirable
A wide range of specialist and sub-specialist experience relevant to the post within the NHS or a comparable service would be advantageous. This might include experience in specific therapeutic approaches, leadership roles, or service development initiatives.
Person Specification – Academic Skills & Lifelong Learning
Essential
You must be able to deliver undergraduate or postgraduate teaching and training. The ability to work effectively in teams and lead when required is essential. You should demonstrate commitment to shared leadership and collaborative working to deliver improvement.
Participation in continuous professional development, research or service evaluation, and the ability to use and appraise clinical evidence are required. You should have actively participated in clinical audit and quality improvement programmes.
Desirable
It would be beneficial to be able to plan and deliver undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training specifically relevant to this post. Reflection on the purpose of CPD undertaken and experience in clinical research and/or service evaluation would strengthen your application.
Evidence of achievement in education, research, audit, and service improvement such as awards, prizes, presentations, and publications would be advantageous. Experience leading clinical audits that have led to service change or improved patient outcomes is also desirable.
