Department Structure
The Department of ENT Surgery is primarily based at Castle Hill Hospital and currently comprises seven substantive consultants, three locum consultants, five specialist registrars, and a Head & Neck Fellow. Our department provides comprehensive ENT services including dedicated outpatient services, joint inpatient ward with Breast & Plastic Surgery, and state-of-the-art day surgery facilities in our recently built Day Surgery Centre. We also provide paediatric and day surgery sessions at Hull Royal Infirmary while managing emergencies on the acute site.
Specialist Services
Our department offers a full Head and Neck and Thyroid cancer service, delivered by two specialist Head and Neck surgeons and two specialist Thyroid surgeons within the Trust. We are proud to offer both Transoral Robotic and Transoral Endoscopic surgery, supported by the full range of allied surgical specialties including Reconstructive Plastic surgeons, Maxillofacial surgeons, Neurosurgical and Cardiothoracic surgeons. Our multi-disciplinary team is further strengthened by collaboration with colleagues from North Lincolnshire and Goole Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
Research Opportunities
We maintain an ongoing Head and Neck and Thyroid research programme overseen by Professor John Greenman in the Daisy Building and Hull University. Main Duties and Responsibilities
As a Consultant ENT Surgeon, you will collaborate with our team to maintain ENT services in line with strategic requirements. You will provide both routine and emergency ENT services to the Trust, operating within our system of mutual out-of-hours cover and covering for annual, study and professional leave. Your role will include elective delivery within the general pool of ENT work and appropriate sub-speciality surgical ENT care in accordance with Trust priorities.
Educational Responsibilities
You will participate in the education and training of junior doctors, medical students, nurses, paramedics, general practitioners and other appropriate NHS colleagues. This teaching role is integral to our commitment to developing the next generation of healthcare professionals and maintaining the highest standards of clinical excellence.
Salary and Benefits
We offer an attractive salary range of £109,725 to £145,478 per annum, pro rata, depending on experience and qualifications. This position is full-time and permanent, providing job security and excellent career progression opportunities within the NHS framework. The role follows the Hospital Medical and Dental Staff pay scheme at Consultant grade.

Essential Qualifications
Candidates must possess FRCS (ORL-HNS) qualifications and have completed higher training (CCT or within 6 months of obtaining). Full registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) is essential. These qualifications ensure you meet the rigorous standards required for consultant-level practice within the UK healthcare system.
Desirable Qualifications
While not essential, possession of a postgraduate degree (e.g., MD, PhD), postgraduate qualification in Education, or Post CCT Fellowship would be advantageous. These additional qualifications demonstrate commitment to academic excellence and continuous professional development.
Clinical Experience Requirements
Successful candidates must demonstrate the ability to offer sound clinical opinion on a range of acute medical conditions and take full independent responsibility for clinical care of patients. This experience is crucial for providing the high-quality care our patients expect and deserve.
Management and Administration Experience
We seek candidates with proven ability to manage and lead medical/surgical teams, lead on smooth and efficient running of the unit, and organize, prioritize and manage high-intensity workload. Desirable skills include the ability to develop, present and operationalize coherent ideas for service development/delivery and evidence of participation in quality improvement projects.
Teaching, Audit and Research
Essential requirements include experience of supervising junior medical staff, commitment to formal and informal teaching of medical staff, AHPs and medical students, evidence of participation in audit, and ability to extrapolate clinical research evidence to care for individual patients. Desirable attributes include evidence of having conducted practice-changing audit, experience of teaching/training in clinical courses, and original peer-reviewed research publications.
