About the Role
Milton Keynes University Hospital NHS Foundation Trust is inviting applications for a Consultant position in Cellular Pathology. This is a replacement post offering 10 programmed activities and will complete a team of seven consultant histopathologists. The post is full-time, but applicants who are unable to work full-time for personal reasons are also encouraged to apply.
Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be contracted to provide histopathology and non-gynaecological cytology services at Milton Keynes Hospital Foundation Trust, working alongside colleagues in Cellular Pathology. There will be opportunities for teaching, including Cellular pathology Speciality Trainees from the Oxford rotation and Buckingham University Medical Students.
Job Plan Structure
The job plan consists of 10 programmed activities with a split of DCC (Dedicated Clinical Commitment) and SPA (Specialty and Professional Activities). Specifically, 7.5 PAs will be allocated to DCC duties and 2.5 PAs to SPA activities. The DCC includes cut-up, diagnostic reporting, MDT meetings, internal peer case reviews, external referrals, administration, and NHS autopsies.
SPA Allocation
The SPA component is made up of 1 PA of core activities (appraisal, revalidation, CME, routine departmental meetings) and non-core activities. Non-core SPA may reflect activities such as educational supervision, research, leadership and quality improvement. Further allocation of up to 2.5 SPA is available for specific roles with defined objectives.
Qualifications
Essential qualifications include a medical degree, FRCPath or equivalent, full and specialist registration with the GMC (or eligibility within six months), and either a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) for UK-trained applicants or evidence of equivalence for non-UK trained applicants.
Essential Experience
Candidates must have broad experience in all aspects of Cellular Pathology to provide effective and safe management of outpatients, elective and emergency patients. Significant postgraduate experience is required, including relevant higher medical training as a Specialist Trainee or Senior Registrar.
Clinical Skills
Essential clinical skills include experience in contributing to multidisciplinary patient management and understanding of clinical risk management. Candidates should also have experience in reporting fine needle aspirates and sufficient broad experience in histopathology and cytopathology.
Communication and Teaching
Good written and verbal communication skills are essential, along with evidence of the ability to communicate with patients, colleagues and staff at all levels. A proven background in organising and delivering undergraduate and post-graduate teaching and research is highly desirable for this role.
Leadership and Management
The ability to motivate and develop training of medical and non-medical staff is essential. Candidates should be able to work independently as well as part of the Pathology Division and balance individual requirements against those of the Directorate and Trust as a whole.
Health Requirements
Applicants must be in good health and demonstrate immunisation against Hepatitis B, plus proof of Hepatitis B antigen negative status. This is a mandatory requirement for all clinical staff in pathology departments.
Research and Audit
Candidates must be able to appraise research and have a thorough understanding of the principles of audit. Publications in peer-reviewed journals in the field of cellular pathology are desirable but not essential for this position.
