We are seeking a highly skilled Clinical Scientist/Highly Specialised Sleep Physiologist to join our team at Birmingham Children’s Hospital. Job Responsibilities
The successful candidate will plan, perform, and interpret advanced specialist respiratory and sleep diagnostic investigations to a high level of competence on children without supervision. You will be involved in the appropriate deployment and supervision of staff, resource management, and collaborate with other professionals to ensure service provision meets professional standards. Regular machine checks on all Lung Function/Sleep equipment and documentation of any faults will be part of your duties.
Clinical Duties
You will undertake non-invasive ventilation (NIV) titration to patients when required, complying with Trust policy and department protocol. Using highly developed skills and judgment, you will determine when a patient requires emergency attention, discussing findings with appropriate medical staff. You will analyze and interpret complex sleep data, provide factual reports to medical staff, and oversee reports formulated by junior staff.
Person Specification – Knowledge & Experience
Essential requirements include practical experience and familiarity with the range of specialist and advanced sleep physiological investigations, training in advanced skills and knowledge within relevant field, and experience performing with pediatric patients. Desirable candidates will have experience of advanced sleep physiology investigations in the paediatric age range such as Full Polysomnography.
Analytical and Judgment Skills
You must have experience in planning, performing, and interpreting a range of pediatric sleep physiological investigations. The ability to work autonomously and undertake complex hand-eye coordination tasks for diagnostic equipment use is essential. You will need to concentrate for prolonged periods when analyzing, scoring, and reporting complex sleep studies.
Essential Qualifications
Applicants must possess an STP Respiratory & Sleep Physiology qualification or equivalent Masters course with a Certificate of equivalence at STP level, a BSc (Hons) Clinical Physiology (respiratory) or equivalent, HCPC registration (or working towards) as Clinical Scientist, and ARTP/Sleep professional body exams or other sleep qualification. Chartered Scientist status is desirable.
Professional & Managerial Skills
Excellent IT skills and the ability to provide formal teaching and/or supervision to junior staff or visitors are essential. You must be capable of communicating complex and sensitive information to children, relatives, and carers, including those with learning or physical disabilities. The ability to communicate with staff at all levels is crucial.
Working Environment
The role requires the ability to cope with frequent exposure to unpleasant working conditions such as body fluids, head lice, aggression (verbal and occasionally physical), and contained chemicals. You will coordinate and cooperate with others to plan and prioritize workload effectively in a fast-paced hospital environment.
