About the Role
The Consultant Physicians in Geriatric Medicine at Glan Clwyd Hospital have responsibility for managing inpatient services alongside several Advanced Nurse Practitioners and Trainee Nurse Practitioners. This position involves working across multiple sites including Colwyn Bay Hospital, Denbigh Infirmary, Holywell Community Hospital, and Llandudno General Hospital.
You will provide clinical input to community-based Enhanced Care Services in North and South Denbighshire, which have received awards for their excellence. The department also has a researcher with a special interest in Parkinson’s disease and supports a Movement Disorder Service with a Specialist Consultant and 3 Parkinson’s disease Specialist Nurses.
As a Consultant Geriatrician, you will have the opportunity to make significant contributions to patient care, medical education, and service development within the NHS.
Key Responsibilities
Provide Consultant input to 10-12 beds in a 24-bedded COTE ward (Ward 1) in Glan Clwyd Hospital alongside other consultant colleagues. The ward is supported by 1 SpR, 1 GP trainee, 1 IMT and 2 FY doctors.
Attend the ward’s Board Rounds to discuss patient management and discharge plans with junior doctors and the multidisciplinary team. You will have continuing responsibility for patient care in liaison with Consultant colleagues, allowing for proper delegation to and training of staff.
Participate in a 1:17 acute medical on-call rota with prospective cover (1 additional DCC) and post-take ward rounds. You will act as Educational or Clinical Supervisor for junior medical staff assigned to you, overseeing their training and offering career advice within the guidelines of specialist bodies and Royal Colleges.

Qualifications and Professional Training
Essential:
- GMC Specialist Registration or within 6 months of obtaining CCT from date of interview
- MRCP or equivalent
Desirable:
- Higher Degree e.g., MD, PhD
- Publications in peer reviewed journals
Clinical Experience
Essential:
- A wide experience in general and geriatric medicine
- Experience of clinical audit
Desirable:
- Experience in frailty, stroke, community geriatrics or other sub specialty
Teaching
Essential: Experience of teaching undergraduate and postgraduate medical staff, and therapy and nursing staff.
Desirable: Teaching qualification
Skills
Essential:
- The ability to lead a multidisciplinary team
- Ability to develop and maintain good working relationships with colleagues
- IT skills

The salary range for this position is £110,240 to £160,951 per annum pro rata, depending on experience and qualifications. This represents a competitive remuneration package within the NHS consultant pay scale.
