An exciting opportunity has arisen to join our highly reputable Specialist Kidney Cancer Team as a Surgical Care Practitioner (SCP) at the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust. Job Summary

The post is being offered at Band 8a for a well-established SCP, or as a Band 7 developmental role through which you will receive robust training to work up to an 8A level. Main Duties

The post holder will be expected to provide an expert SCP role in the Specialist Centre for Kidney Cancer. The successful applicant will have experience within the theatre environment and will work as an integral member of the Kidney Cancer and theatre team. The SCP will perform their extended role to provide high-quality perioperative care across a range of robotic and laparoscopic kidney procedures.

Research and Development

An audit and research interest is important for this role. The SCP will be expected to liaise appropriately with all key members of the multidisciplinary team and service users to ensure patients receive a seamless surgical experience. They will act as a highly specialised role model and leader for all members of staff and play a major role in the continuous development of the service.

Essential Qualifications

To be considered for this position, you must be a registered general nurse with a relevant First Degree and a Master’s degree in Surgical Care Practice (Qualified SCP). You should also have an appropriate teaching certificate or extensive teaching experience, an advance assessment qualification (OSCE), and an advance communication skills course.

Additional Requirements

Essential requirements include evidence of recent professional/management/leadership development, Basic Surgical Skills (RCS course), and First Surgical Assistant Course (Intuitive-Da Vinci). Desirable qualifications include a non-medical prescribing course or willingness to undertake, and intravesical chemotherapy (mitomycin) administration course.

Clinical Experience

You must demonstrate extensive experience in Urology (Kidney) Robotic/Laparoscopic/Open Assisting as SCP for various procedures including partial nephrectomy, complex partial nephrectomy, radical nephrectomy, retroperitoneal partial/radical nephrectomy, nephroureterectomy, and reconstructive surgery.

Specialist Skills

Experience in running nurse/SCP led clinics is essential, including preoperative surgical clinic, follow-up post kidney cancer treatment, active surveillance for kidney conditions, and post-operative follow-up SCP clinic. You should also be independent in flexible cystoscopy for various procedures.

Leadership Experience

The successful candidate will have experience in a senior nurse role in an acute NHS setting and in perioperative management of complex surgical patients. Competencies

Competencies as defined by the Curriculum Framework for Surgical Care Practitioners for the NHS National Practitioner programme are essential. You should have up-to-date knowledge of current clinical and professional issues, sound knowledge of current issues in the profession and practice of nursing, and excellent verbal, written, interpersonal and communication skills.

Clinical Knowledge

A sound knowledge of quality standards & NICE recommendations/NSF and up-to-date knowledge of EAU guidelines is required. You should also demonstrate proven listening/counselling skills, excellent skills in time management and organization, and evidence of teaching/presentation skills.
