Job Summary
We are seeking a dedicated Community Learning Disability Nurse to join our Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) Learning Disability Team. This is an exciting opportunity to provide clinically effective, high-quality nursing services to children and young people with learning disabilities and their families/carers. The successful candidate will be clinically competent to hold an active caseload and provide comprehensive support, advice, healthcare promotion, and holistic health assessments.
About the Role
The post holder will play a crucial role in improving early identification of challenging behavior and mental health issues in children and young people with moderate to profound learning disabilities. You will also contribute to enhancing the quality of support provided to children and young people with moderate to profound learning disabilities who are based within specialist educational settings. This position involves working closely with the CAMHS Learning Disability Psychiatrist, Psychologist, and Team Manager to review, audit, and help implement strategic changes to achieve targets in line with government initiatives.
Key Responsibilities
The main duties of this role include adhering to the NMC Code of Professional Conduct for nurses, midwives, and health visitors. You will be responsible for managing an identified, complex caseload of young people diagnosed with moderate to severe learning disabilities and comorbid mental health difficulties. The position requires you to act as a role model and motivate team members toward innovative, evidence-based practice of the highest standard.
Clinical Practice
You will ensure that contemporaneous records are maintained to the highest professional standards. Promoting a team approach to care within a multi-disciplinary framework is essential, involving liaison and effective communication of confidential and sensitive information with other statutory and voluntary agencies. The post holder will work autonomously and effectively as part of the community learning disability nursing service while managing their own caseload efficiently.
Professional Development
The successful candidate will ensure that the community learning disability nursing service develops in line with BSMHFT core values and outcomes, while following government recommendations and public health initiatives. You will be expected to support and work closely with colleagues as part of a multi-disciplinary team within SOLAR and other professionals working at different levels outside the organization to support the needs of children and young people.

Person Specification – Essential Criteria
To be considered for this position, applicants must be a Registered Learning Disabilities Nurse educated to Diploma/Degree Level. You must hold professional registration with a regulating body such as the NMC. Significant experience working with young people with ASD and Learning Disabilities in a community setting is essential. Additionally, you should have knowledge and experience of working within community mental health services and holding a complex caseload.
Person Specification – Desirable Criteria
While not essential, experience of working in Community CAMHS would be advantageous for this role. Skills with Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) are also considered desirable. Candidates with these additional qualifications or experiences will be given preference during the selection process.
