About the Opportunity

This is a 3-year apprenticeship program specialising in radiation physics, leading to a BSc(Hons) Healthcare Science qualification. The program combines workplace learning with academic study, providing you with the knowledge and skills needed to become a registered Healthcare Scientist. A permanent role may be offered on successful completion of the training program and entry onto the appropriate registration.

Key Responsibilities

As an Apprentice Healthcare Scientist Practitioner, you will be responsible for:

  • Performing daily technical administration for occupational and environmental monitoring
  • Issuing and receiving occupational and environmental monitors
  • Liaising with the Approved Dosimetry Service
  • Organizing calibration of radiation monitoring instruments
  • Performing Quality Control measurements on complex x-ray and associated devices
  • Analyzing test results and producing reports
  • Maintaining records for Clinical Trial activities

You will also be expected to adhere strictly to all radiation safety protocols and maintain accurate documentation for compliance purposes. Regular training updates will be provided to ensure you remain current with industry standards and regulatory requirements.

Qualification Requirements

To be eligible for this apprenticeship, you must meet the following qualification requirements:

  • Minimum 3 GCSEs at Grades A*-C (or equivalent level 2 qualifications)
  • Minimum Level 2 in Numeracy and Literacy (e.g., Grade C-5 or above in GCSE Maths and English)
  • Level 3 Qualifications equivalent to 96 UCAS Points (A Level grades C/C/C, including at least one relevant STEM subject at 32 points/grade C or higher)

Lower grades may be accepted if accompanied by extensive (4+ years) demonstrable experience in a relevant setting such as Healthcare Science. Applicants with equivalent qualifications from other countries are encouraged to apply, but must provide evidence of UK equivalence through UK NARIC or recognized accreditation bodies.

Accepted Level 3 Qualifications

  • A level – a minimum of 64 points (CC), including at least one relevant STEM subject at 32 points/Grade C or higher
  • BTEC Level 4 Diploma in Healthcare Science – including pass grades in units that relate to the PTP specialism specified within the application
  • BTEC National Extended Diploma – Grade MPP, including at least one relevant STEM subject
  • Access to Higher Education Diploma – at least 45 credits achieved at level 3 (15 at merit or above); 15 level 3 credits must be in STEM-based units

Essential Experience and Skills

In addition to qualifications, candidates should demonstrate the following:

  • IT skills; intermediate analysis using Microsoft Office Suite
  • Ability to work without direct supervision under relevant operational procedures
  • Good communication skills and ability to communicate effectively
  • Able to prioritise, manage and plan work for self
  • Ability to work well within a busy environment and meet reasonable deadlines
  • Able to carry out accurate practical measurements
  • Frequent requirement to concentrate
  • Occasional requirement to lift and move equipment (moderate physical effort)
  • Ability to deal with occasional distressing circumstances

The role may require occasional travel to other Trust sites for training or calibration purposes. Candidates must demonstrate flexibility in adapting to varying work environments and schedules as needed.

Desirable Skills

While not required, having manual dexterity to accurately position test equipment would be considered advantageous. Experience with radiation safety equipment is highly desirable but not mandatory. Previous experience in healthcare or laboratory settings would also be beneficial.
