Service Overview
Durham Tees Valley Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services work with children and young people up to the age of 18 across Getting Help, Getting More Help and neurodevelopmental assessment teams. Our generic teams are closely linked with LD CAMHS, Eating Disorders and Forensic CAMHS services. The out-of-hours activity is supported by a dedicated CAMHS crisis team operating on a 24/7 basis, providing extended crisis input as well as home treatment options as an alternative to hospital admissions.
Clinical Responsibilities
The North Durham CAMH service is a community, out-patient specialist Getting More Help CAMHS team, supported by a Getting Help Service which works into schools and with young people experiencing mild/moderate mental health difficulties. The service serves the Durham City, Consett and Chester-le-Street populations, covering approximately 180,000 people across all ages with approximately 25% being under 18 years.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
The successful candidate will be expected to offer mental health assessment, psychiatric opinions, diagnosis and holistic care plans for patients up to the age of 18, referred to them during working hours and when on call. The Trust expects approximately 2 new patient assessments per week with 650 face-to-face contacts per year for a full-time consultant, though exact figures can vary depending upon the type of work undertaken and agreement during job planning.
Clinical Scope
Direct patient contact will include new patients to the service, new psychiatric assessments and review appointments. Main conditions would be expected to include ADHD, ASD, Anxiety Disorders, Mood Disorders, Eating Disorders, Tic Disorders, Psychosis, Self-harm, Conduct Disorder and Sleep disorders. The Trust has several person-centred pathways of care developed specifically for young people, and the post holder would generally be expected to follow these established protocols.
Work Environment
Clinical work would be expected to be carried out predominantly within the clinical base at the Rosewood Centre in Middlesbrough but may occur within other settings. For example, a young person may have strong preferences about being seen in an alternative community setting, or it may be more appropriate to see a young person at their school. There will also be infrequent occasions when young people need to be seen in other settings such as the acute hospital, police station or a residential placement.
Essential Qualifications
MB BS or equivalent medical qualification. Full registration with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment. Able to deliver undergraduate or postgraduate teaching and training. Evidence of participation in continuous professional development. Experience in research or service evaluation. Ability to use and appraise clinical evidence. Active participation in clinical audit.
Desirable Qualifications
Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management. MRCPsych or equivalent postgraduate qualification. Approved Clinician Status and Section 12 Status OR ability to achieve within 3 months of appointment. Able to plan and deliver undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training relevant to this post. Evidence of reflection on purpose of CPD undertaken. Experience in clinical research and/or service evaluation.

Knowledge of structure and management of the NHS and the Trust. Shows commitment to quality through knowledge of quality improvement and lean thinking methodology OR able to achieve within one year of appointment. Able to adapt to and lead service change.
Clinical Knowledge and Skills
Excellent knowledge in specialty with excellent clinical skills using bio-psycho-social perspective and wide medical knowledge. Excellent oral and written communication skills in English. Able to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty. Makes decisions based on evidence and experience including the contribution of others. Able to meet duties under Mental Health Act and Mental Capacity Act.
Leadership Requirements
The ideal candidate will demonstrate ability to take on a leadership role outside the multidisciplinary team. Understanding of NHS and wider health economy and its implications for the work of the Trust. Trained to standard equivalent to level 2 in TEWV Trust Quality improvement system.
Academic Skills and Lifelong Learning
Evidence of achievement in education, research, audit and service improvement including awards, prizes, presentations and publications. Experience in leading clinical audits leading to service change. Reflected on purpose of CPD undertaken.
