About the Position
We are proud to announce that Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust and Anthony Nolan have recently joined forces to facilitate the UK’s first Anthony Nolan Cell Collection Centre. Our new partnership enables the expansion of life-saving stem cell collection services in the UK and creates opportunities to develop research programmes in the future.
As the Apheresis Specialist Nurse, you will be based at Queen’s Medical Centre in Nottingham, within the Anthony Nolan Cell Collection Centre, hosted by the Clinical Research Facility. This unique opportunity allows you to work at the forefront of stem cell collection and transplantation services.
You will work closely with the Apheresis Nurse Manager and the CCC Lead Nurse to provide all aspects of clinical care for patients and stem cell donors. This role offers the chance to make a significant impact on patients’ lives through specialized apheresis procedures.
Key Responsibilities
You will work as part of a highly skilled specialist team acting as a source of clinical expertise. Your responsibilities will include taking responsibility for the care of donors/patients requiring specialist apheresis procedures under the guidance of the Apheresis Nurse Manager.
You will be expected to be a competent, knowledgeable and visible practitioner within the speciality, ensuring the provision of excellent, evidence-based nursing care for donors/patients. This requires staying current with clinical protocols and best practice while maintaining specialist knowledge of apheresis.
The role involves delivering the apheresis service on behalf of Anthony Nolan, in accordance with apheresis service guidelines and assessing, treating, and referring donors/patients to other members of the clinical team as required.
You will need to be competent in the care and management of peripheral venous catheters, central venous catheters, venepuncture, cannulation, intravenous drug administration, apheresis and blood product administration in accordance with the guidelines for clinical practice.

Person Specification
Training and Qualification
Essential requirements include first level registration with Nursing & Midwifery Council (NMC), a degree or equivalent diploma, evidence of continuing professional development, completion of an intravenous medication package, proficiency in cannulation and venepuncture, and completion of an apheresis training programme.
Desirable qualifications include a teaching or mentorship course, which would enhance your ability to support the development of junior staff and students within our specialized team.
Experience
Essential experience includes post-registration clinical experience in apheresis practices and procedures, supervision of registered and non-registered staff and students, and the ability to manage workload efficiently and effectively.
Desirable experience includes teaching and assessing experience, as well as service development or improvement experience, demonstrating your ability to contribute to the ongoing enhancement of our services.
Communication and Relationship Skills
Essential skills include the ability to convey sensitive information in an empathetic manner to patients, relatives, carers and staff. You must demonstrate effective written and verbal communication skills and be able to produce timely, accurate written or electronic records and documents.
Additional essential skills include recognition of your own level of competence and limitations and the ability to communicate these to appropriate staff, evidence of negotiation and influencing skills, and the ability to minimise interpersonal conflict and barriers to communication.
Team working skills are essential, and desirable skills include the delivery of formal teaching sessions, which would be valuable in our educational environment.
Analytical and Judgement Skills
Essential analytical skills include the ability to assess, plan, deliver, prioritise and evaluate patient care. You must be able to identify your own learning needs, respond effectively to difficult situations, and recognise gaps in service provision.
Planning and Organisation Skills
Essential planning skills include the ability to prioritise your own workload and recognise and respond appropriately to urgent and emergency situations. You should be able to contribute to the development, implementation and monitoring of local objectives and action plans.

Physical Skills
Essential physical skills include being physically able to perform the full range of nursing duties, dexterity and accuracy in undertaking clinical skills, and the competent use of medical equipment.
You must be able to undertake manual handling manoeuvres and have evidence of moving and handling training. The role requires the ability to work a flexible working pattern of long days including weekend working, which is typical in healthcare settings.
