Job Summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen within our Anaesthetics team for a permanent Consultant in Anaesthesia. The main duties will involve providing anaesthesia for the surgical operating theatre suite. As a department, we are proud of our high training and educational reputation in the West Midlands. There is the possibility to negotiate reduced or additional DCC / SPA sessions for those with either additional commitments or talents.

Main Duties
The successful candidate will undertake daytime clinical anaesthetic duties in the theatre suite, which may also include obstetrics, ECT, cardioversion, or thoracoscopy outside the main suite. As a DGH, we cover a wide range of specialties including elective paediatrics over the age of 2. The overnight and weekend on call is a 1:12 rota that covers critical care, theatres, and maternity services.
You will be expected to take part in regular Departmental, Academic, and Audit meetings as part of your role. The post-holder would be required to participate in Continuing Medical Education to the level required by the Royal College of Anaesthetists / IBTICM as appropriate to the individual. You will also be expected to be familiar with and adhere to the Trust’s policies on Clinical Governance, Confidentiality, and Infection Control.
The role involves providing leadership within the anaesthesia team and contributing to the development of services. You will be responsible for ensuring the highest standards of patient care while working collaboratively with other healthcare professionals. There will also be opportunities to participate in teaching and training activities for junior medical staff and students.
Person Specification
We are looking for candidates who demonstrate behaviours consistent with the Trust’s Values and Behaviours. You must have leadership ability and be able to work effectively within a team environment. The role requires the ability to take responsibility, lead, make decisions, and exert appropriate authority while maintaining excellent communication skills, both oral and written.
Essential qualifications include full GMC Registration Licence to practise, experience of working in the NHS, and being on the GMC Specialist Register or within 6 months of attainment of Specialist Registration in Anaesthesia on day of interview. You should also have proven experience as a generalist in the provision of Anaesthesia, widespread broad-based knowledge in all aspects of Critical Care & Anaesthesia, and practical skills commensurate with these requirements.
Desirable qualifications include higher training or equivalent in ITU or Obstetric anaesthesia, experience as an Educational Supervisor, and additional qualifications such as ALS/ATLS/ EPLS/ APLS Provider/ Instructor or MRCP. We also value candidates with proven experience of teaching at under/post graduate levels and peer-reviewed publications, though these are not essential requirements for the position.
Qualifications and Experience
Essential experience for this role includes commitment and training in medical education, along with the ability to teach in clinical settings. You must demonstrate evidence of robust clinical audit practice and understanding the underlying principles of clinical governance. The ability to deliver both high-quality clinical service and managerial responsibilities is also essential.
Additional essential requirements include the ability to develop and lead new service improvements, skills in working collaboratively with colleagues across different specialties, and the capacity to contribute to departmental strategic planning. You should also be comfortable with the on-call requirements of the role, which include overnight and weekend duties on a 1:12 rota.
