About the Role

An exciting opportunity has become available for a Consultant Psychiatrist to join our CAMHS (Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services) team in Hemel Hempstead for a year. This position has been created because the existing consultant psychiatrist has taken on a clinical director role for the Provider collaborative and requires 6 PAs to backfill his clinical duties. This newly created post addresses the growing demand on our service.

Team Structure

Hemel Hempstead is part of the West CAMHS team which also includes the St Albans CAMHS team. The successful candidate will be based in the Hemel Hampstead Team and will join the existing 2 Consultant Psychiatrists in St Albans clinic while backfilling for another consultant psychiatrist in Hemel Hempstead clinic. The multidisciplinary team includes 2 higher trainees ST4-6, 2 core psychiatry trainees, a GP trainee, 2 SAS doctors, and various specialists including psychotherapists, psychologists, family therapists, social workers, clinical nurse specialists, and independent prescribers.

Main Duties

The successful candidate will have several key responsibilities including working closely with the multidisciplinary team and other agencies in health and social care. Quality Assurance

The successful candidate will participate in regular Audit and Quality Assurance programmes to maintain the high standard of service. Participation in POMH audits is encouraged. You will also provide advice, support, and consultancy in various settings to minimise risk, and offer liaison and consultation with local acute paediatric services as required.

Teaching and Development

This role provides opportunities for case-based discussion and teaching to the MDT. You will be expected to deliver undergraduate or postgraduate teaching and training, participate in continuous professional development, and engage in research or service evaluation. The ability to use and appraise clinical evidence, and active participation in clinical audit are essential components of this position.

Professional Supervision

The successful candidate will manage, appraise, and provide professional supervision to junior medical staff as agreed by consultant colleagues and the medical director. This may include assessing competences under the Modernising Medical Careers framework. You will also provide support to the High-risk Pathway and clinical nurse specialist, and participate in annual appraisal for consultants.

Essential Qualifications

To be considered for this position, you must hold MB BS or an equivalent medical qualification. You must also have a higher qualification in psychiatry such as MRCPsych or an equivalent qualification approved by the Royal College of Psychiatrists. Additionally, you must be fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment.

Desirable Attributes

While not essential, being in good standing with the GMC with respect to warnings and conditions on practice is desirable. Additional desirable qualifications include higher degrees in medical education, clinical research, or management, or relevant higher degrees such as MD, PhD, or MSc. A wide range of specialist and sub-specialist experience within NHS or comparable services is also advantageous.

Clinical Skills

Excellent oral and written communication skills are essential for this role. You must be able to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty, making decisions based on evidence and experience including the contribution of others. The ability to plan and deliver undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training relevant to this post is highly valued.

Academic Requirements

Holding a full valid driving license and access to a car is required unless you have a disability as defined by the Disability Discrimination Act 1995. You should be able to reflect on the purpose of CPD undertaken and have experience in clinical research and/or service evaluation. Evidence of achievement in education, research, audit, and service improvement through awards, prizes, presentations, and publications is desirable.
