Location
The position is based at Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport, Wales. The hospital is situated on Cardiff Road with the postcode NP20 2UB. The Urology Directorate provides services for the population of Gwent and South Powys (649,000), centralised at this location.
Salary and Benefits
The position offers a competitive salary of £121,264 per annum, pro rata. Working Pattern
This is a full-time position on a fixed-term contract lasting 1 year. The post holder’s time job plan will include outpatient clinics, surgical sessions, administrative duties and provision of care for inpatient, day case and emergency admission.
Department Overview
The Urology Department at Royal Gwent Hospital offers outpatient, diagnostic and administrative services from a dedicated department adjacent to Urology wards and the emergency assessment unit. The main radiology department is in close proximity as is the urology day case unit and urology theatres. From April 2024, the department also offers robotic surgery situated in the main theatre suite.
Specialist Areas
The Department has an excellent reputation for expertise in the management of urological cancer, laparoscopic surgery, female urology and urinary stone disease. Robotic surgery became available in June 2024. Our services have been developed with the dedicated support of nurse practitioners who are an integral part in the management of patients with urological cancer and benign urological conditions.
Special Interest Opportunity
While not essential, candidates with a special interest in HOLEP Surgery would be advantageous. This opportunity allows you to develop your subspecialty interests while complementing those of the current team.
Team Structure
You will be joining a team of 11 Urology consultants, 4 Specialist Registrars, and 2 senior clinical fellows. On-call responsibilities are also provided at Grange University Hospital, Cwmbran, on a non-resident basis.
Key Responsibilities
The post holder will be responsible for providing clinical outcomes for patients under their management and continuing responsibility for patients in their care. This includes working in liaison with advanced nurse practitioners, clinical nurse specialists, Consultant colleagues, junior clinical team, patients and families. Supervision of junior members of the clinical team is also an integral part of the role.
Clinical Practice Requirements
You will conduct clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements within the parameters of the Division’s and Health Board’s agreed objectives. All work must be undertaken in accordance with the Health Board’s procedures and operating policies.
Leadership and Development
Key responsibilities include ensuring the provision of a first-class clinical service, providing effective leadership to all staff engaged in the speciality, and sustaining and developing teaching and research wherever appropriate.
Professional Registration
Applicants must hold full registration and a licence to practice with the General Medical Council (GMC). Candidates for Consultant posts must also be on the GMC Specialist Register (including via CESR/European Community Rights) or will have a CCT/CESR(CP) date within 6 months of interview.
