Job Overview
Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust is seeking enthusiastic, motivated, and skilled locum radiologists to join our expanding radiology team. We currently have thirteen consultant radiologists, two consultant sonographers, and two consultant reporting radiographers. This is an excellent opportunity for international medical professionals looking to advance their careers in the UK’s National Health Service.
Key Responsibilities
As a Locum Consultant Radiologist, you will play an active role in our Radiology Service, sharing responsibility with other consultant radiologists for providing appropriate services and advice. You will support our 7-day imaging service, including being resident on site until 8pm Monday to Friday on a rotational basis, and Saturday/Sunday for 6 hours. You will communicate effectively with both internal departments and external agencies.
Clinical Duties
Your clinical responsibilities will include emergency work, outpatient activities, participation in multi-disciplinary meetings about direct patient care, and related administration. You will lead clinically on a modality within your area of subspecialist interest and take responsibility for the supervision, training, and education of junior medical staff, radiographic staff, nursing staff, and other healthcare professionals.
Professional Development
The Trust supports 1.5 SPA (Supporting Professional Activities) sessions for personal development and quality improvement, with additional negotiable PA time for educational supervision or leadership roles such as REALM lead, Audit lead, Guideline lead, or modality leads. You will be expected to contribute to audit activities, evidence-based medicine development, IT infrastructure support, and clinical governance.
Person Specification
We are seeking candidates with a strong commitment to excellence in radiology practice and patient care. Our ideal candidate will have sound clinical judgment, good interpersonal skills, and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
Essential Qualifications
Applicants must hold current GMC Registration, FRCR or equivalent qualification, and MBChB, MBBS or equivalent medical degree. Evidence of Higher Speciality Experience/Training in Clinical Radiology is essential, along with prior experience in audit and/or research. You must also demonstrate evidence of radiology subspecialty interest.
Desirable Qualifications
While not essential, evidence of subspecialty experience in Paediatrics, Non-vascular intervention, and Nuclear Medicine would be advantageous. Additional desirable qualifications include radiology subspecialty fellowship exams, MRCP, MRCS, or other Royal College additional exams, and postgraduate degrees such as Masters, Post Graduate Diploma, or Certificate.
Essential Experience
You must have sound clinical judgment, good interpersonal skills, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team. Prior experience in audit and/or research is required, along with evidence of radiology subspecialty interest.
Desirable Experience
Experience in subspecialty areas such as Paediatrics, Non-vascular intervention, and Nuclear Medicine is particularly welcomed. Six months of UK experience as a doctor at registrar or consultant level is desirable, as is evidence of radiology specialist registration (CCT or CESR).
Working Pattern
This position is offered as a 10 PA (Programmed Activity) session subject to work schedule, agreed arrangements, and mutual agreement with the Clinical Lead. Part-time working patterns (minimum 6 PA) are negotiable based on mutual agreement and service demand. The job plan will be reviewed at 3 months and 6 months, with further annual reviews thereafter.
