We are seeking a motivated Consultant in Acute Medicine to join our dynamic general medicine service. This appointment will support the Welsh Government’s vision for NHS Wales and will be based at Withybush General Hospital in Pembrokeshire. The successful candidate will join a team of established medical consultants and will have dedicated support to develop and maintain specialist interests.

Main Duties of the Job
The primary responsibility of this role is to provide, in collaboration with consultant colleagues as appropriate, a comprehensive service in General Medicine. You will support the development of sub-specialty interests both within the hospital and community settings, with designated responsibilities for the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of illness across the patient population.
All clinical staff are accountable and responsible for maintaining their own clinical competence and should limit their professional actions to those areas where they are deemed competent. Clinical staff must also comply with the requirements of their professional organization regarding supervision responsibilities and ethical standards.
As a senior employee of the Health Board, you will work in close cooperation with, and provide support to, other clinical, medical professional, and managerial colleagues. This collaborative approach ensures the delivery of high-quality healthcare services to the Health Board’s diverse patient population across Pembrokeshire and the surrounding regions.

Hywel Dda University Health Board serves as both the planner and provider of NHS healthcare services for the people of Carmarthenshire, Ceredigion, Pembrokeshire, and bordering counties. Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential: Full GMC Registration and Licence to Practice; on Specialist Register with GMC or CCT due within 6 months of interview date; Portfolio Pathway (CESR) or equivalent European Qualifications for Specialist Registration; MRCP; Valid Certified Advanced Life Support Skills.
Desirable: Appropriate Higher Degree such as MD, PhD, or MSc or equivalent qualification that demonstrates advanced academic achievement in a relevant medical field.
Clinical Experience
Essential: Broad based experience in Acute General Medicine; knowledge of UK hospital systems or equivalent international experience; demonstrated knowledge and participation in Continuing Professional Development (CPD); proven expertise in Acute General Medicine.
Desirable: Direct experience of NHS systems; wider experience, research, and training in providing subspecialty services; additional clinical qualifications that enhance professional capabilities and scope of practice.
Clinical Governance
Essential: Evidence of participation in clinical audit and thorough understanding of the role of audit in improving medical practice and patient outcomes. Experience in implementing audit findings to enhance service delivery.
Desirable: Knowledge of annual job planning and appraisal review processes, demonstrating commitment to professional development and quality improvement initiatives within healthcare settings.
Research
Essential: Experience and knowledge of critical appraisal of evidence to improve clinical outcomes. Ability to translate research findings into practical applications that enhance patient care and medical practice.
Desirable: Research degree or equivalent research experience that contributes to the body of medical knowledge and evidence-based practice within the field of acute medicine.
Teaching
Essential: Evidence of organizing programs and teaching medical students and resident doctors. Demonstrated ability to effectively mentor and educate the next generation of medical professionals in clinical settings.
Desirable: Experience in organizing further teaching programs in medical education; “Training the Trainers” experience that shows commitment to developing educational capacity within the organization.
Management
Essential: Knowledge of the management and structure of the NHS, including understanding of healthcare systems, organizational dynamics, and the operational framework within which medical services are delivered.
Desirable: Evidence of management training or experience in healthcare leadership, demonstrating the ability to contribute to organizational development and service improvement initiatives.
