Main Duties of the Job
The Living Well psychiatrist will provide expert advice to GPs for patients not currently accessing secondary care mental health services. This includes medication advice, signposting to other services, clinical management, and diagnostic support provided Monday to Friday.
The post holder will work with the Living Well in Oldham service, providing clinical leadership to the multidisciplinary team across Oldham. This involves developing and expanding the team, delivering training to new members, and championing the service with stakeholders.
Responsibilities include providing high-quality mental healthcare for adults with severe and enduring mental health problems in the community, working closely with other teams and consultants to ensure integrated care.
Additional duties involve supporting service development, attending local and divisional meetings, and contributing to local service user and carer groups to ensure patient-centered care approaches.
About the Organisation
The post is based at Cherrywood Outpatient Clinic, Royal Oldham Hospital, which operates an Inpatient-Outpatient model with 6 full-time Consultants in Adult Psychiatry. Each Community Consultant is supported by a Junior Doctor from NW Deanery training schemes, with input from advanced practitioners and specialty doctors.
Oldham has a strong teaching commitment, and candidates will be expected to contribute to the education of medical and nursing staff. There are close links to ongoing research projects, providing opportunities for academic development and contribution to the evidence base.
The Living Well model represents an innovative approach to community mental healthcare, focusing on prevention, early intervention, and reducing reliance on secondary services. This offers a unique opportunity to shape service development and implementation.
Person Specification
Essential Criteria
- Possession of Medical Degree
- Full GMC registration with License to practice
- Entry into Specialist Register
- Higher psychiatric training or its equivalent
- Section 12(2) Approval under Mental Health Act 1983 or eligibility for approval
Desirable Criteria
- MRCPsych or equivalent, registered as completed Higher Training with the Royal College of Psychiatrists
- Progress towards additional postgraduate degree (MSc, MD)
- Other postgraduate degrees (MSc, MD, MRCP)
- Possession of CCT in general adult psychiatry or within 6 months of achieving this
- Current or past experience as educational supervisor of basic trainees and specialist registrars
- Evidence of leading service development elsewhere
On-Call Requirements
The position includes low frequency on-call duties (1 in 31) with full second tier on-call cover and one day off following on-call shifts. This manageable on-call commitment supports work-life balance while ensuring comprehensive service coverage.
