About the Role
We are seeking a motivated Occupational Therapist to join our Medium Secure unit at The Hatherton Centre, St George’s Hospital in Stafford. You will be working with adult males with a variety of mental health needs within this secure setting. This is an exciting opportunity to make a real difference in the lives of service users while developing your professional skills.
The successful candidate will work closely with our multidisciplinary team, bringing fresh ideas to develop therapy delivery for service users. We are looking for a self-motivated and caring individual who will contribute positively to the quality of life for our service users and deliver high-quality care.
Key Responsibilities
As an Occupational Therapist, you will be responsible for assessing functional needs and contributing to the formulation and development of relevant plans based on service users’ negotiated goals and evidence-based interventions. You will carry out all stages of the Occupational Therapy process including assessments, planning, implementing interventions, and evaluating outcomes.
The post holder will take responsibility for managing a complex caseload, which includes specialist assessment, care planning in conjunction with service users and carers, and evaluation of individual treatment plans. You will observe and record outcomes for individual and group interventions supporting the assessment and treatment of service users.
You will complete timely and accurate written and verbal feedback for all interventions to support the delivery and review of the overall Occupational Therapy intervention plan. The role requires you to carry out clinical activities independently while also providing support and assistance to other staff carrying out interventions.
Person Specification
Essential Qualifications
- Dip COT or degree in Occupational Therapy
- Health and Care Professions Council Registered Occupational Therapist
Essential Experience
- Post and pre-registration experience working in a range of clinical settings
- Relevant experience working within health, social care settings with transferable knowledge and skills, specifically experience of working with people with Mental Health needs
- Experience of formulating assessments, planning and co-ordinating therapy/interventions
Essential Skills and Abilities
- Ability to work independently, being self-motivated and to effectively manage competing needs and pressures
- Ability to form positive therapeutic relationships with service users and carers to work with them on a 1:1 and group basis
- Ability to act calmly in emergencies and respond professionally in stressful and challenging situations
- Ability to work under own initiative and as part of a multidisciplinary team

Employment Details
This is a permanent, full-time position working 37.5 hours per week. The salary ranges from £31,049 to £37,796 per year (pro rata). The post is based at The Hatherton Centre, St George’s Hospital in Stafford, Staffordshire, ST16 3AG.
The post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975, requiring a Disclosure and Barring Service check for any previous criminal convictions. You must also have current UK professional registration as an Occupational Therapist.
