About the Opportunity
Mersey Care NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an experienced Consultant Psychiatrist to join their inpatient team at Harrington Ward, located at the Broadoak Unit in Liverpool. Location and Facilities
The position is based at the Broadoak Unit, part of Broadgreen Hospital in Liverpool. Work is underway on a state-of-the-art, purpose-built hospital in South Liverpool that will replace the current Broadoak facility once completed. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to transition to the new facility when it becomes operational.
Salary and Benefits

Role Overview
The successful candidate will be responsible for Harrington ward, a female general adult ward with 17 patients. You will work as part of a team of three inpatient Consultants at Broadoak Unit, providing expert psychiatric care and leadership to ensure the highest standards of patient care.
Clinical Responsibilities
Your key responsibilities will include conducting comprehensive psychiatric assessments, providing treatment for inpatients, supporting staff in managing psychiatric emergencies, and conducting patient reviews. You will also lead multidisciplinary ward reviews, CPA reviews, and multi-professional meetings.
Legal and Ethical Duties
As the Responsible Clinician under the Mental Health Act 1983 (amended 2007), you will carry out duties in accordance with the code of practice. This includes providing verbal and written evidence to Mental Health Review Tribunals and Hospital Manager’s hearings, as well as conducting comprehensive risk assessments.
Leadership Opportunities
This role offers excellent opportunities for professional leadership and development. You will provide medical leadership to the inpatient team, liaise with carers and other stakeholders, and contribute to service evaluation and future service development planning.
Teaching and Training
The post holder is expected to participate in undergraduate and postgraduate clinical teaching, as well as providing educational supervision to trainees and other colleagues. Mersey Care has specific links with Liverpool Medical School and Edge Hill University Medical School, providing excellent teaching opportunities.
Person Specification – Essential Requirements
To be considered for this position, you must hold MB BS or equivalent medical qualification and be fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment. You must also be included on the GMC Specialist Register or be able to register within six months of appointment.
Professional Registration
The successful candidate will need to have or obtain Approved Clinician status within three months of appointment and be approved under Section 12 of the Mental Health Act within the same timeframe. You will also need to hold a valid UK driving licence or provide evidence of an acceptable alternative.
Desirable Qualifications
While not essential, qualifications or higher degrees in medical education, clinical research, or management would be advantageous. MRCPsych and additional clinical qualifications are also desirable. Being in good standing with the GMC with respect to warnings and conditions on practice is also preferred.
Clinical Skills and Experience
Applicants should demonstrate excellent knowledge in psychiatry and outstanding clinical skills using a bio-psycho-social perspective. You must have excellent oral and written communication skills in English and be able to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty effectively.
Academic Requirements
The successful candidate should be able to deliver undergraduate or postgraduate teaching and training, demonstrate ability to work in and lead a team, and show commitment to shared leadership and collaborative working. You should have participated in continuous professional development, research or service evaluation, and clinical audit activities.
