About the Position
North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Trust is seeking to appoint a Consultant in Anaesthetics at the West Cumberland Hospital, Whitehaven. This is an excellent opportunity for experienced anaesthetists looking to relocate to the UK and advance their career within the NHS.
The successful candidate will be encouraged to develop a special interest to complement the other members of the department and will participate in the provision of services to the population of North Cumbria. Key Responsibilities
For daytime work, the successful applicant will be encouraged to work across a range of anaesthetic areas and develop areas of interest. There will be the expectation of working at both hospital sites to encourage greater experience.
The successful candidate will be experienced and highly motivated. They will be expected to participate fully within departmental activities, including teaching and audit. The job plan will remain flexible to allow for skills in all anaesthetic specialities to be maintained.
Person Specification
Qualifications and Training (Essential)
- Valid Registration with the General Medical Council
- Fellow of Royal College of Anaesthetists or equivalent
- Completed Higher Specialist Training in Anaesthetics or evidence of equivalent competency (approved by PMETB/GMC)
- On the Specialist Register for the above, or be within 6 months of being admitted to the Register at the time of interview
- Evidence of day time and/or on call experience in ICU and maternity during the last 2 years, either at ST6-7 or consultant level
Qualifications and Training (Desirable)
- Other relevant medical and non-medical training/degree
- Other relevant postgraduate qualification
- Instructor status in either ATLS/APLS/ALS
- Evidence of recent and on-going CPD in intensive care
Skills and Knowledge (Essential)
- Excellent communication skills with patients, colleagues, managers and other staff
- Knowledge of Audit process & Clinical Governance
- Ability to organise workload efficiently
- A special interest to complement that of the existing post-holders
- A commitment to, and experience of teaching
Skills and Knowledge (Desirable)
- Qualifications in teaching/instructing
- Experience of development of teaching resources
Experience (Essential)
- High level of clinical experience and competence in a wide variety of fields of anaesthesia
Experience (Desirable)
- Experience and understanding of District General Hospital practice
Research and Teaching Experience (Essential)
- Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems
- Commitment to continuing medical education, appraisal and clinical governance
Research and Teaching Experience (Desirable)
- Publications in peer reviewed journals
- Experience of teaching to undergraduates and postgraduates
Personal Circumstances (Essential)
- Able to participate on-call and emergency cover
- Ability to travel to fulfil the requirements of the post
- Able to be based within 30 minutes of the base hospital
Remuneration and Benefits
This position offers a competitive salary ranging from £109,725 to £145,478 per annum, dependent on experience and qualifications. The post is available on a full-time, permanent basis.

About West Cumberland Hospital
The West Cumberland Hospital is located in Whitehaven, Cumbria, and serves a population of around 150,000 people. The hospital provides a range of services including emergency medicine, surgery, maternity services, and diagnostic imaging.
The hospital is easily accessible by road and is approximately 30 minutes from the M6 motorway. Whitehaven is a coastal town with good transport links to major cities including Carlisle and Manchester.
