Job Overview
Leeds Teaching Hospitals is seeking a Consultant in Haematological Malignancy Diagnostic Service (HMDS) to join their internationally renowned team. This 8 PA (Programme Activities) position offers a unique opportunity to work at one of Europe’s largest specialist Haematopathology laboratories serving a population of 6 million across the North of England. The post comes with a certificate of sponsorship for eligible international candidates.

Job Responsibilities
The successful candidate will play a full part in the provision of the diagnostic service, including support of multi-disciplinary teams across the region. They will be expected to contribute fully to the research and development plan for the department, offering opportunities to develop personal research and clinical interests.
The post holder will work within an experienced team of around 100 staff, including 7 consultants and 6 consultant and principal grade clinical scientists. The department processes greater than 40,000 specimens per year, with responsibilities including the final reporting of specimens received within the laboratory (bone marrow, peripheral blood, and lymph node biopsies being the most common specimen categories), provision of specialist advice on diagnostic problems, and participation in haematology multi-disciplinary team meetings.
The Haematological Malignancy Diagnostic Service has excellent facilities for flow cytometry, molecular diagnostics, immunohistology, and informatics. The appointed person will have full access to all these specialised services and will be expected to develop an area of specialist diagnostic expertise complementary with other team members.
Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential: MB BS or equivalent qualification; full GMC Registration with a license to practice; eligibility to work in the UK; up to date and fit to practice safely.
Desirable: Relevant higher degree.
Experience
Essential: Must demonstrate a high level of clinical experience and competence in the laboratory diagnosis of haematological malignancy and related disorders; specifically, must demonstrate higher subspecialty training in haematopathology; evidence of continuous career progression consistent with personal circumstances.
Training, Research, Teaching & Audit
Essential: Should have completed a recognised training programme in either Haematology or Histopathology; evidence of the ability to carry out medical research; experience in training undergraduate medical students and postgraduate doctors; experience of participation in regular clinical audit.
Desirable: Previous experience of supervising research by junior staff; previous attendance on Appraisal Techniques and Small Group Teaching Workshops.
Management, Interpersonal Skills & Other Requirements
Essential: Understanding of current issues in the NHS; well organised and skilled in good time management; effective interpersonal skills; ability to relate to and work within a team.
Desirable: Attendance at recognised management course.
Working Arrangements
This is a permanent, part-time position with flexible working arrangements. The post is 8 PA (Programme Activities) per week, and consideration will be given to applicants who wish to work full or part time and those wishing to job share. The successful candidate will be based at St. James’s University Hospital in Leeds.
Research and Development Opportunities
The Haematological Malignancy Diagnostic Service has an active programme of research and development across many areas, including involvement in national and international clinical trials. A major priority is developing diagnostic platforms to support precision medicine, with several initiatives underway. The post offers many opportunities for career development and involvement in research and innovation.
The successful candidate will be part of a large and established consultant group delivering the full breadth of haematology services across Yorkshire and beyond with extensive research activity. The title of Honorary Senior Lecturer at Leeds University Medical School will also be offered to the successful candidate.
Interview Process
If shortlisted, candidates will be required to give a 10-minute presentation on “The opportunities and challenges of an integrated haematopathology service.” Interviews will be held on Tuesday 18 November 2025.

The successful candidate will receive a competitive salary ranging from £109,725 to £145,478 per year (dependent on experience and qualifications).
