Location
This position is based at Dyfed Powys Police in Newtown, Powys (Postcode: SY16 1EN). The role requires flexibility to work across assigned regions within Police Custody Suites and Force areas, providing healthcare coverage where needed most.
Compensation and Benefits
As a full-time permanent employee, you’ll receive a competitive salary of £41,000 per year plus additional benefits including a £1,000 bonus upon completion of 12 months service (£500 for part-time). Average estimated overtime earnings are approximately £3,500 per annum. The position also includes NMC/HCPC Registration paid by the employer.
Working Pattern
This full-time position operates on a fixed shift pattern of 4 shifts on followed by 4 days off. The shifts alternate between day shifts (06:45 to 19:00) and night shifts (18:45 to 07:00). A rolling rota is available two years in advance, providing excellent work-life planning flexibility.
Key Responsibilities
As a Forensic Custody Nurse or Paramedic, you will collaborate with police officers to deliver healthcare to detainees in custody suites. Your duties will include assessing detainees’ health needs, providing appropriate medical care, maintaining accurate records, and ensuring the safety and wellbeing of individuals in your care. You’ll work round-the-clock coverage in custody suites as per the schedule agreed with our police service partner.
Essential Qualifications
Applicants must hold one of the following qualifications with at least 2 years post-registration experience: RN, RGN, RMN with dual registration, or Paramedic registration. All candidates must hold a valid driving license and possess the right to work in the UK (British Passport or Indefinite Leave to Remain with no more than 3 months absence from the country in the past 3 years).
Required Experience
Candidates must have a minimum of 2 years post-qualification experience in a patient-facing role within relevant fields such as General Practice, A&E, Emergency Medicine, acute medicine, Walk-in Centres, Substance Misuse Services, Prison Healthcare, or Ambulance Service. This experience demonstrates your ability to work effectively in challenging healthcare environments.
Person Specification
We’re looking for healthcare professionals who can demonstrate exceptional clinical skills, empathy, and professionalism. The ideal candidate will have a genuine enthusiasm for developing clinical and forensic skills while working within the unique environment of police custody suites. Strong communication abilities and the capacity to work both independently and as part of a multidisciplinary team are essential.
Professional Registration
All applicants must hold current professional registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) or the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC). We will cover the costs of maintaining this registration throughout your employment with us.
Disclosure and Barring Service Check
