Hospital Facilities
We operate through four main hospitals: Bronglais General in Aberystwyth, Glangwili General in Carmarthen, Prince Philip in Llanelli and Withybush General in Haverfordwest. Additionally, we have seven community hospitals and numerous locations providing mental health and learning disabilities services.
Job Summary
This is an exciting opportunity to join a team of Acute Physicians at Glangwili General Hospital. The post holder will be expected to help develop and deliver all aspects of the Acute Medicine service through the Emergency Department, Clinical Decision Unit (CDU) and Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC).
Current Team Structure
There are currently 4.3 WTE Acute Medicine Consultants in the Hospital and the incumbent will be required to support the expansion of this service in hospital and in the community working closely with other colleagues.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
Clinical Responsibilities
To provide acute assessment and treatment of medical patients presenting to GGH front door (Emergency Department, Clinical Decision Unit and Same Day Emergency Care). Providing timely assessment and treatment of patients presenting to GGH with medical conditions.
Leadership and Management
Providing effective leadership to multidisciplinary staff members in the CDU, SDEC and ED. Ensuring close working with GP and medical colleagues. Ensure close working between A&E, SDEC and CDU.
Clinical Supervision
Provide clinical supervision of the SDEC and Emergency Department medical patients. Ensure close cooperation with other medical consultant colleagues to develop seamless pathways of care for patients.
Service Development
Work with the team to the development of “hot clinics” as an alternative to admission. Ensure close liaison with GP colleagues to direct patients to the most suitable service.
Training and Education
Ensure development, support and training for nurse consultant and nurse practitioner colleagues. Provide the necessary training and support of junior doctors.
Essential Qualifications
Full GMC Registration and Licence to Practice. On Specialist Register with GMC or CCT due within 6 months of interview date. Or CESR or equivalent European Qualifications for Specialist Registration. MRCP or equivalent. Valid Certified Advanced Life Support Skills.
Essential Clinical Experience
Broad based experience in Acute/General Medicine. Knowledge of UK hospital systems (or equivalent). Knowledge and participation in CPD. Competence in Acute/General Medicine. Expertise in Acute and general medicine.
Desirable Qualifications and Experience
Appropriate Higher Degree e.g. MD, PhD or MSc or equivalent. Experience of NHS. Wider experience, research and training in providing sub specialty service. Evidence of above average performance. Additional clinical qualification(s).
Clinical Governance Requirements
Evidence of participation in clinical audit and understanding role of audit in improving medical practice. Knowledge of risk management (desirable). Knowledge of annual job planning/appraisal review process (desirable).
Research and Teaching Expectations
Experience and knowledge of critical appraisal of evidence to improve clinical outcomes. Evidence of organising programmes and teaching medical students and junior doctors. Evidence of initiating research projects with publication (desirable). Research Degree (desirable).
Management Knowledge
Knowledge of the management and structure of the NHS. Evidence of management training (desirable).
