Service Area and Population
Our service covers a total population of approximately 175,729 residents, accepting young people and adults with all psychiatric illnesses in the age range of 14-65. The team serves an area experiencing high socioeconomic deprivation, with a significant proportion of young people with NEET status (not in employment, education or training). This provides a challenging yet rewarding environment for mental health professionals.
Team Structure and Working Model
Hull East and Hull West Community Mental Health Team operates according to the New Ways of Working Model, with the Consultant providing consultation to care coordinators. The team maintains a full complement of Care Coordinators, Social Workers, and Clinical Support Nurses. We have an active in-house training programme and are increasingly family-oriented in our overall approach to complement individual support, relapse prevention, and other therapies.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
As a Consultant Psychiatrist, you will have responsibility for the provision of safe and effective care and treatment. The team typically receives approximately 30 new referrals per week from various sources including GPs, the Mental Health Triage and Assessment Team, and Acute Mental Health Wards. You will carry a compact caseload of the most complex and unstable cases while providing consultation and advice to other team members at short notice.
Clinical Expectations
The post holder would be expected to be approved as a Responsible Clinician or be willing to undertake training to obtain Section 12(2) MHA approval, renewing this according to agreed procedures. You will share the vision of integrated and multi-disciplinary working and actively engage in service development through research and support activities.
Essential Qualifications and Requirements
Essential qualifications include: MB BS or equivalent medical qualification; full registration with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment; inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register OR within six months; approved clinician status OR ability to achieve within 3 months of appointment; and approval under S12 OR ability to achieve within 3 months of appointment.
Desirable Qualifications
While not essential, desirable qualifications include: qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management; and being in good standing with GMC with respect to warnings and conditions on practice.
Clinical Skills and Experience Requirements
Essential clinical skills include: excellent knowledge in specialty; excellent clinical skills using bio-psycho-social perspective and wide medical knowledge; excellent oral and written communication skills in English; ability to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty; and making decisions based on evidence and experience including the contribution of others.
Academic Skills and Lifelong Learning
The ideal candidate will be able to deliver undergraduate or postgraduate teaching and training, demonstrate ability to work in and lead teams, and utilize and appraise clinical evidence. Desirable academic skills include experience in clinical research and/or service evaluation, with evidence of achievement in education, research, audit and service improvement.
