Job Opportunity: Consultant Psychiatrist in Adult Learning Disability
Tees Esk and Wear Valleys NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a dedicated Consultant Psychiatrist in Adult Learning Disability to join our team at North Moor House in Northallerton. Position Details
This permanent part-time position offers flexible working arrangements with a competitive salary range of £105,504 to £139,882 per annum. The role is based within our Adult Learning Disability Community Team serving the Hambleton & Richmondshire District plus Botton Village areas.
About the Role
This replacement post has become available as the previous Consultant Psychiatrist has retired. The successful candidate will provide specialist psychiatric care to adults with learning disabilities across our community-based service. The position involves working collaboratively with a multidisciplinary team and various system partners including Primary Care, Local Authority, and Voluntary Sector partners.
Geographical Coverage
The service covers Hambleton, Richmondshire, and Botton Village areas, serving a total population of approximately 150,000. The Consultant will hold clinics at North Moor House and conduct home visits as needed, maintaining excellent relationships with local mental health, CYPS & Older Person services.
Clinical Responsibilities
The postholder will manage cases with support from a keyworker from the team, typically a community nurse. Referrals are received in each locality, with teams operating local duty systems and triaging their own referrals while providing advice and support to referrers.
Inpatient Care Arrangements
This is a community-based post where patients requiring inpatient treatment are admitted under Greenlight arrangements to Adult Mental Health wards. There is also access to Learning Disability Assessment and Treatment beds at Bankfields Court, Middlesbrough, which is part of TEWV services.

Essential Qualifications
Applicants must possess an MB BS or equivalent medical qualification and be fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practise at the time of appointment. Additional essential qualifications include the ability to deliver undergraduate or postgraduate teaching and training, participation in continuous professional development, research or service evaluation experience, ability to use and appraise clinical evidence, and active participation in clinical audit.
Desirable Qualifications
Preferred qualifications include the ability to plan and deliver undergraduate and postgraduate teaching relevant to this post, reflection on CPD purpose, experience in clinical research and/or service evaluation, evidence of achievement in education/research/audit/service improvement, and experience leading clinical audits leading to service change.
Essential Experience Requirements
Candidates must demonstrate the ability to reflect on own performance and behavior while seeking and acting on feedback. Additional requirements include the ability to influence and persuade to improve services, take on leadership roles in multidisciplinary teams, knowledge of NHS and Trust structure and management, commitment to quality through knowledge of quality improvement methodology, and ability to adapt to and lead service change.
Leadership Skills
The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership capabilities including the ability to take on leadership roles outside the multidisciplinary team, understanding of NHS & wider health economy implications, and training equivalent to level 2 in TEWV Trust Quality improvement system.
Clinical Knowledge & Skills
Excellent knowledge in specialty with exceptional clinical skills using bio-psycho-social perspective and wide medical knowledge are essential. Candidates must demonstrate excellent oral and written communication skills in English, ability to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty, evidence-based decision making, and ability to meet duties under MHA and MCA.
