Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust is seeking an exceptional Consultant ENT Surgeon with a special interest in Head & Neck surgery to join our dynamic team at Castle Hill Hospital. This is a permanent, full-time position offering an excellent salary range of £109,725 to £145,478 per annum, plus additional benefits. Department Structure
The Department of ENT Surgery is primarily based at Castle Hill Hospital and currently comprises seven substantive consultants, three locum consultants, five specialist registrars, and a Head & Neck Fellow. Our department provides comprehensive ENT services including dedicated outpatient services, joint inpatient care with Breast & Plastic Surgery, and state-of-the-art day surgery facilities in our recently built Day Surgery Centre.
Service Excellence
At Castle Hill Hospital, we offer paediatric and day surgery sessions at Hull Royal Infirmary while managing emergencies on the acute site. Our consultants support the team in delivering routine ENT surgery workload and share duties with the current consultant team to provide exceptional ENT surgical services for our local population.
Specialist Head & Neck Service
The department offers a comprehensive Head and Neck and Thyroid cancer service delivered by two specialist Head and Neck surgeons and two specialist Thyroid surgeons within the Trust. We are proud to offer both Transoral Robotic and Transoral Endoscopic surgery, supported by the full range of allied surgical specialties including Reconstructive Plastic surgeons, Maxillofacial surgeons, Neurosurgical and Cardiothoracic surgeons.
Multidisciplinary Collaboration
Our multi-disciplinary team is further strengthened by collaboration with colleagues from North Lincolnshire and Goole Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, ensuring comprehensive patient care across the region. We maintain an ongoing Head and Neck and Thyroid research programme overseen by Professor John Greenman in the Daisy Building and Hull University.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
The successful candidate will collaborate and work to maintain ENT services in line with strategic requirements. You will provide routine and emergency ENT services to the Trust, operating a system of mutual out-of-hours cover, and covering for annual, study and professional leave alongside other ENT consultants.
Clinical Responsibilities
You will provide elective delivery within the general pool of ENT work and appropriate sub-speciality surgical ENT care in accordance with Trust priorities. Participation in the education and training of junior doctors, medical students, nurses, paramedics, general practitioners, and other appropriate NHS colleagues is an essential component of this role.
Essential Qualifications and Experience
Candidates must possess Full Registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) and hold the FRCS (ORL-HNS) qualification. Completion of higher training (CCT or within 6 months of obtaining) is essential. The ability to offer sound clinical opinion on a range of acute medical conditions and take full independent responsibility for clinical care of patients is required.
Desirable Qualifications
While not essential, possession of a postgraduate degree (e.g., MD, PhD), postgraduate qualification in Education, or Post CCT Fellowship would be advantageous. We value continuous professional development and encourage applications from candidates committed to academic and clinical excellence.
Management and Administration Experience
The ideal candidate will demonstrate ability to manage and lead medical/surgical teams, lead on smooth and efficient running of the unit, and organize, prioritize and manage high-intensity workload. Desirable attributes include the ability to develop, present and operationalize coherent ideas for service development/delivery and evidence of participation in quality improvement projects.
Teaching, Audit and Research
We seek candidates with experience supervising junior medical staff, commitment to formal and informal teaching of medical staff, AHPs and medical students, and evidence of participation in audit. The ability to extrapolate clinical research evidence to care for individual patients is essential. Desirable experience includes evidence of having conducted practice-changing audit, teaching/training in clinical courses, and original peer-reviewed research publications.
Personal Attributes
The successful candidate will demonstrate ability to work flexibly in a changing health service, excellent manner with patients being sensitive to their needs and fears, and ability to communicate effectively with patients, relatives, GPs, Nurses and other health professionals. Willingness to undertake additional professional responsibilities at local, regional and national levels is expected.
