The Role Overview
This newly developed consultant position introduces a lymphoma subspecialty to our existing team of seven consultants as part of a comprehensive redesign of haematology services across the Health Board. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in developing this subspecialty while working alongside our generalist consultants to provide exceptional patient care.
Clinical Responsibilities
The appointed consultant will demonstrate extensive experience in lymphoma management and general haematology. Clinical duties include participation in inpatient care through attending and on-call rotas for the Haverfordwest site, with consultative contributions to local medical teams at three peripheral hospital sites.
Outpatient Services
The role involves conducting 3-4 outpatient clinics per week, focusing on lymphoma and general haematology cases. Depending on the applicant’s experience, consideration may be given to incorporating other subspecialist workload areas. The position includes participation in weekly health board-wide multidisciplinary team meetings and opportunities to join all-Wales MDTs.
Job Plan Structure
This consultant position offers 10 programmed activities per week with 20% dedicated to Supporting Professional Activities (SPA). The role may require clinics at other hospital sites, with virtual clinic options available. The successful candidate will contribute significantly to developing our rural service to ensure excellent patient care delivery.
Team Support Structure
The post is supported by a comprehensive team including Associate Specialists, Specialty Doctors, Clinical Fellows, Foundation Trainees, Haematology Clinical Nurse Specialists, and Specialist Pharmacists. This robust support system ensures collaborative working and professional development opportunities.
Essential Qualifications
Candidates must possess full GMC Registration and Licence to Practice, with inclusion on the Specialist Register or expected CCT within six months of interview date. Alternative pathways include Portfolio Pathway (CESR) or equivalent European Qualifications for Specialist Registration. MRCP and/or FRCPath qualifications are essential, along with valid Certified Advanced Life Support Skills.
Clinical Experience Requirements
Essential experience includes broad-based clinical haematology expertise, knowledge of UK hospital systems (or equivalent), participation in Continuing Professional Development, competence in general haematology, on-call experience, and expertise in lymphoma treatments and malignant disease management. Excellent communication skills and adherence to GMC’s “Good Medical Practice” standards are mandatory.
Desirable Qualifications and Experience
Preferred candidates will possess appropriate higher degrees (MD, PhD, or MSc), NHS experience, wider subspecialty experience, research training, evidence of above-average performance, Royal College of Physicians membership, and additional clinical qualifications.
Clinical Governance and Research
The successful candidate will demonstrate evidence of participation in clinical audit, understanding of Clinical Governance principles, experience in critical evidence appraisal, and preferably research project initiation and publication experience.
Teaching and Management Responsibilities
Essential requirements include evidence of teaching medical students and junior doctors, comprehension of Clinical Governance principles, knowledge of NHS management structure, and willingness to participate in clinical management activities.
Salary and Benefits Package
